Internet business consultant Vince Thompson returns to "The Jam," where host Bridget McManus interviews him about his book, "Ignited," and his advice on entering the workforce for the first time, and also getting back into the workforce after some time away.
In this episode:
Good advice on how to explain your resume, especially the time that you spent in between projects. As i am a consultant, its hard to explain what i did in the time between jobs.
I thought this clip was helpful and inspiring. Especially to those who have taken a break from their career and may be fearful to "jump back in"
Helps you realize that everyday life is a note-worthy experience we can use to push ourselves forward in the world.
I actually learned something today. I have always feared the gaps in my resume because I spent 4 years bartending so my professional resume has holes in it.
As a college student, I'll admit that I've said "Well if I had the means to do so, I'd...", so I certainly understand where Mr. Thompson is coming from. This book sounds like an interesting read, and next time I have the opportunity I think I'll flip through a few pages and see what I think. Who knows, I just might go after my dream career after all.
What great advice! I spent a couple of years in college and a year and a half after I got married without working a single job, and that "lapse" on my resume was so hard to explain. I think I lost out on many job opportunities because I just told potential employers I had been busy with school and moving and getting settled into my new life. It would have made such a better impact and impression if I had approached it from a "what I've learned" perspective. Definitely great advice for the future!
A very helpful advice both for a new comer to professional life as well as for a person who has taken a break from his previous employment for personal reasons. I think the book about which the Author is discussing in the video clip may be useful even to an employee like me who is stick on to a job for many years.I realized that with my valuable experience I could have achieved more than what I have done till today.
Good basic advice, but nothing that hasn't already been said before. I probably would have stressed to those with gaps in their resume that they should do some volunteer work to capitalize on the "what I've learned" theme. Still, this is the kind of basic advice that many younger folks need to know.
This is a good teaser episode. It doesn't give a lot of really good information, but for somebody who is the ambitious type or has lofty goals, this would be a good motivator. However, getting and reading a book is always the easy part. It's the putting the first foot forward and following that up with the second foot that people fail to do. In other words people just don't get started (or at least that was my biggest hang up).
