QBQ! The Question Behind the Question: Practicing Personal Accountability in Work and in Life by John G. Miller

The lack of personal accountability is a problem that has resulted in an epidemic of blame, complaining, and procrastination. No organization-or individual-can achieve goals, compete in the marketplace, fulfill a vision, or develop people and teams without personal accountability.

John G. Miller believes that pointing fingers and blaming others cannot solve the troubles that plague organizations. Rather, the real solutions are found when each of us recognizes the power of personal accountability. In QBQ! The Question Behind the Question, Miller explains how negative, inappropriate questions like "Why do we have to go through all this change?" and "Who dropped the ball?" represent a lack of personal accountability. Conversely, when we ask better questions-QBQs-such as "What can I do to contribute?" or "How can I help solve the problem?" our lives and our organizations are transformed.

I got my copy off of a swap group for $15 credits and it was well worth it. I have read it twice and will probably read it again. When my kids are older they will be reading it too and I have recommended it to several friends. It’s an easy quick read, it took me less then an hour to read the book. More then being a quick read it is a fascinating book that really forces the reader to change their thinking. Practicing personal accountability in work and life is a book every one should read. The author seems to motivate you and empower you so that by the end of the book you look at your actions differently. The Question Behind the question has you asking what you can do to improve something. It is a wonderful idea and book that will inspire everyone who reads it to take that stance and change their surrounds. Instead of taking the defensive stance and looking to point fingers at others, look at yourself. I recommend it so much that I think every teenager should read it and that it should be taught in school.
