Do you think that healthy food couldn't possibly taste good? Does the idea of "eating healthy" conjure up images of roughage and steamed vegetables? Author Ellie Krieger, host of Food Network's Healthy Appetite, will change all that. A registered dietitian, Ellie is also a lover and proponent of good, fresh food, simply but deliciously prepared. And she's not about denial—no nonfat foods here, because when you take the fat out of natural foods, in go the chemicals. Don't deny yourself butter—use a pat of it, but put it front and center on those mashed potatoes, so you can revel in it with all your senses. The Food You Crave is all you'll need to change the way you eat and change the way you feel. It contains 200 recipes that cover every meal of the day and every craving you might have. Every recipe contains a complete nutritional breakdown, as well as tips on ingredients and techniques that will keep you eating smart and eating well.
Those who watch the Food Network may already know Ellie Krieger. She hosts the program 'Healthy Appetites'- a common-sense variant on the usual tv cooking-show fare.
In her book, The Food You Crave, she takes that same common-sense attitude and applies it to the food we eat every day. This is no diet book, but it is, perhaps, a 'health' book, showing us all how to eat delicious food that we enjoy which, by virtue of its preparation, is also healthy. There are no faddish fat-replacers or low-calorie recipes here; she has no need for them. Instead, these meals are naturally healthy- made with real ingredients- fresh fruits and veg, etc, that leave your taste buds (and all your other senses) satisfied without the guilt.
I personally like the Fried Rice w/ Scallions & Tofu & Edamame- a great, simple meal that you can eat for dinner or pack away for lunch the next day. Her cheesecakes are also amazing, and the Green Goddess dressing is fantastic. So check it out, and find new favourites for yourself and your loved ones.
I really enjoy cooking, my girlfriend bought this book for us to engage new activities and become more united, i would have to say, it worked the problem is now she can't get me out of the kitchen, awesome recipes, tons of flavors, lots of pictures that help you through the process, perfect meals that come together with the great smell of spices, i would say that if I enjoyed cooking, after buying this book I now cook as a hobby.
I love this book. I have tons of cookbooks, but I fall back on this one the most frequently of all. Just because something is healthy doesn't mean it can't taste good, and "The Food You Crave" gives simple, basic recipes for good, healthy meals. It gives suggestions for adding flavor without completely denying yourself of the foods you like to eat. The recipes call for a lot of fresh ingredients, which I have never shied away from. Lots of leafy grees, fresh herbs and spices, seafood, and focuses on portion sizes. The only issue I had is that some of the ingredients can be hard to find, and a lot of the fresh ingredients are very seasonal and can be difficult to substitute. Otherwise, I love this book and it's beautiful simplicity.
Ellie Krieger is a registered dietitian for the SAD (Standard American Diet). Her recipes are good (I’m told) if you can eat sugar, wheat, gluten, etc. If you have a restricted diet, you’ll have to modify every recipe. It seems like she skimps in the wrong places to make the recipe more palatable. Some of the ingredients seem kind of expensive and hard to find for the end result. If you are cooking for more than one to two, you may want to double the recipe. I watched her Thanksgiving special on Foodnetwork last year. The portions and I’m not sure how many people it was supposed to feed but it wouldn’t be enough for a large family. A lot of places she could use honey instead of sugar or make slight modifications in other areas to make them more open to everyone. I just don’t like her recipes going from the ingredient list. The other thing that annoys me a little bit is she has a separate website from FoodNetworkTV that you have to join and pay for to use any of her ‘tools’ to maintain a healthy balanced diet. So if you don’t have cash, you can’t use her complete meal plan anyway.
