“I rehabilitate dogs. I train people.” —Cesar Millan
There are at least 68 million dogs in America, and their owners lavish billions of dollars on them every year. So why do so many pampered pets have problems? In this definitive and accessible guide, Cesar Millan—star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—reveals what dogs truly need to live a happy and fulfilled life.
From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions.
This book was an AMAZING read. Cesar has a bold, direct way of communicating with dogs and humans, alike. His strategies were simple as can be. In fact, after my completion of this book, I felt a little dumb. Haha. The things he talks of, are mostly common sense things. Things so basic, that nine times out of ten, we don't even think about it. Currently, my dogs are now well behaved and have successfully quit stealing my socks! I absolutely would refer any dog owner to this book, whether they're an amateur owner or a seasoned owner, as I was. Cesar teaches us humans old tricks... and it is the dogs who are having the last laugh!!
This is a fascinating look at a man who is truly an American success story. Coming to the US as a young man with nothing, he purveyed his love for dogs and his instinctive knowledge about canine behavior into a successful dog rehabilitation business. He is now known by millions of people who watch him on TV.
In his book, Cesar is very candid about his own successes and failings as a man, a husband, and a business person. But his evident love for dogs, and his faith that any dog can be turned around if you work enough with the owner, is remarkable. I received this book as a gift after watching his television show. A former "cat person", Cesar's book convinced me that I wanted to adopt a dog, and my life has not been the same since.
I have a daschund, and was contantly wondering what he was thinking and what he wonders about! I watch Cesar in wonder on television as he seems to actually understand the dogs mentally. He gives a good lesson as to what makes dogs happy, and what we can do as owners to make them as happy as possible. I realized that it is truly us as owners that make our dogs happy, and they will love you no matter what. I know that sounds kind of redundant, but Cesar helped me to understand it more. If only he could create a book like this about humans!
When I began, I was surprised as the first chapters cover Cesar’s life as child in Mexico and how he came into his career as the Dog Whisperer. These chapters later proved to be building blocks in how he learned about dog behavior. In later chapters, it covered canine behavior and the steps of a healthy relationship with your dog. However, if you’re looking for a book that will tell you how to teach your dog to sit, etc… this isn’t the book for you. This book focuses more on the bond, communicating through calm assertive energy, etc.
Being the owner of more than one dog, I found the info in this book invaluable and recommend it to anyone who owns a dog or considers owning a dog in the future. The positive message in this book could even be helpful for those who don’t own dogs and don’t plan to in the future. It didn’t disappoint, I came away feeling as if I could handle my dogs in a way more natural to them and myself, and feeling empowered, not just about my relationship with dogs, but about life in general. It’s a must read.
As ridiculous as this sounds, I don't even own a dog. I don't live with a dog, and I'm not planning on getting one for months. But, I watch The Dog Whisperer religiously and find it really impacting. That's why I choose to read "Cesar's Way". I was confused, though, because I thought it would be like his TV show, but the book focused more on how Cesar came to his dog rearing philosophy. It was interesting to know the back story, just the same. If you watch the TV show like I do, you'll see that there's not much new ground here in regards to dog psychology. It just continues to drive home discipline, calm assertive energy, and how uncomplicated a dog's nature is when we treat them like dogs, instead of like people who can't speak. I think of this book as a self-help for humans, more so than dogs, because humans are the ones that are messing things up for the animals. And I also used this book as a guide for helping me identify when I was not disciplined or clear in my personal life.
