This book is fantastic. There are no words for me to describe this book. This book gives you the tools to take control of the board room at a business or in a regular conversaton. I absolutely love this book! The author gives you the insight and the strength to understand that you control the conversation, you control the outcome, and you control the effort going into the conversation.

I suggest this book for the person who finds that they are not recieving the results that they feel that they derserve. Or for the timid or shy hearted individual who feels that they can't seem to get their point across.

I received this book as a gift and have been thankful for the good advice and techniques I learned ever since. There are few books on negotiating that are as focused on getting what you want as Getting to Yes. I regularly use the book as a reference -I've sticky-tabbed lots of sections- and the advice has never let me down. It doesn't matter what your job is; Everyone has to convince others at some point in their career. You will find useful strategies and new ways of seeing the path to an agreement by reading this book.

If you are wondering if you will want to keep this book, go to your local library and borrow a copy for a week or two. You'll want to own your own copy after trying out any of the techniques and discovering their effectiveness.

I highly recommend owning a copy of Getting to Yes.

I read this book shortly after it was first published, and I still have the notes that I took while reading it. It was an amazing book to me then, and even though there have been many copycats over the years I can still remember the impression that this book made on me.

The authors do not fool around with feel good self help advice. Rather, they spends the entire book showing you how to develop useful skills to use in negotiating anything. Even better, they tie all of these skills together so that you are not left trying to remember a bunch of unrelated techniques. They provide you with a system to negotiate successfully with others. Best of all, their emphasis on finding a win-win solution (before Dr. Covey borrowed the idea) makes an effective overall philosophy to these negotiation techniques. This is the first book that comes to mind when I recommend a book to anyone trying to improve their negotiating skills.

BATNA - Negotiate with confidence

Another good take-out from my library. This book is great for people in leadership positions or managers who have to live and die by negotiating one thing for another. IF you know what I mean and can relate to it, this book is not going to get you the job to negotiate a peace treaty between USA and Iraq but it can sure help you negotiate that extra raise with your boss, or that foreign trip.

BATNA (I wont spill the beans on this one) is sure an effective collection of ways to smooth talk your way into a comfortable place. The tips and tricks are nothing fancy but effective enough to get your work done. You can try them at work or even at home with your partner and get results. Get this book and give it a read. Not sure if its worth buying though. Try your local library first.

I worked for several years in sales, and this book is invaluable. Not because you learn to run over the person and make them agree with you, but because you reach a mutually beneficial agreement! It also comes in handy any time you need to negotiate - whether you want a few dollars off a dinged item in a store, a better rate on your credit card, a raise, or, as I did recently, knocking off 1/2 my library fine. It's not something you HAVE to read, but you'll find your life going more smoothly if you do, and you'll get what you want more often!

I am an Internet guy and when I need to make a deal, I look to this book. Let me give you a little example: Some people hate abortion. Some people think its a right. Well, this book teaches you how to come to a conclusion that "You're right, and you're right, now lets work on a way to reduce the numbers of abortion." Its about coming to conclusions that will have "them" saying yes, and you laughing all the way to the bank. While this is an introduction, it is pretty good for every aspect of life. Its a really neat way to look at the world, and I personally think we could use a little of that in government!

This book was first recommended to me when I was working in a call centre. While you may not be in sales or fund raising, you will need the skills outlined at some point in your life. Whether you're negotiating a raise or trying to get a loan from the bank, you will have to negotiate.

I felt the book could have used a few more examples to help explain some of the concepts, but overall it was interesting and well written. Working out a win-win situation is difficult but this book offers solid advice to help you work toward one.

In virtually all circumstances where people are working together, they come to agreement in ways that short-change the interests of everyone involved. This landmark book shows practical ways to find out what other people want, and to devise better alternatives that create a "win" for everyone. The authors do a great job of overcoming the preconception that many hold that working on problems means that you have to be unpleasant. The advice to be hard on the problems and easy on the people (building a relationship) is a key concept that everyone can use. Do not expect theory, paradigm, or lofty descriptions-this is cut to the chase stuff that lets you know many techniques for negotiating and helping the other side make a decision that is right for all involved. Some helpful key concepts include eliminating emotions from the process, or dealing with the emotional techniques that the other side may use against you. It also describes BATNA, or the best alternatives to a negotiated agreement-those agreements which may be the most realistic and beneficial terms for both sides. It is based on "interest based" negotiation and "expanding the pie" and then "dividing it". It is about cooperative negotiation and how this should be the default rule whenever possible. The core of the book tries to explain the reader that negotiating about fixes positions is most of the time a lose-lose scenario. Therefore it's better to try to look at what both negotiators interests are and then try to work from there. Then by using these interests, the negotiators will be able to find a solutions with is mutual beneficial for both parties. That way a negotiations turns into a win-win situation and also does not have any personal impacts on the people doing the negotiation.
