Any makeover sounds scary to me. A money makeover sounded absolutely frightening! Dave Ramsey is an amazing author and Christian radio personality. After reading the book the makeover idea was no longer scary to me. I have learned practical steps to financial freedom. Reducing debt and budgeting (my biggest problems) were not unreachable goals when I read this book. Practical is truly the word for the book. I was not asked to start with one million dollars. I was just asked to start. Once I started I have been to stay on the course. My financial situation has truly improved. It is a great book, easy-to-read and highly recommended.
Being that I listen to Dave Ramsey on the radio a lot, I had to indulge in this book. Ramsey gives off that "tough love" type of attitude that draws me in. This type of attitude must be applied to something as important as financial management, and he does a great job. With this book, Dave teaches us that we must be on top of our game with money, and that the slightest move can make or break our financial standings. I liked the reading because it kept me on my toes, yet relaxed enough to make the right choices in life.
I actually read the "Total Money Makeover Workbook" on the recommendation of my mother, who had read it herself, and went through the workbook and applied it to her own debt issues. She encouraged me for the better part of a year to pick it up and read it, but I always had some kind of excuse - mostly in that I tend to have no head at all for understanding or listening to anything related to numbers or money!
After having finished college, with over $80,000 in student loan debt and 3 credit cards to pay off, I finally gave in and decided to read it. Dave Ramsey's book actually ended up being a pleasant surprise. I didn't feel like I was being talked down to or scolded, as seems to be the case in so many financially-related help books. I found the advice and steps in the book to be really helpful, and how the information was presented was easy to understand and interesting (especially to me, as an arts major I found the graphs interesting - my brain can't process numbers themselves easily!).
At one time when I was really hopeless about finances, Dave's book helped me to get my financial issues in order, or at least start me on the process to get there. It hasn't even been a year yet, and I can happily say I have 2 of those 3 credit cards paid off!
I grew up in Dave Ramsey's home town, and his "financial plaza" was right across from my job for several years, so you could say I'm pretty familiar with his ideas. This book is a great thing to get a young person started in the right direction, even though it seems largely aimed at older people. Through TMMO, I am paying off my one small credit card and saving for my honeymoon, a downpayment, and for retirement - and I'm 25. This book explains step-by-step exactly what to do, but it leaves the hardest part up to the reader: they have to DO it. Whether it means taking a part-time job (not as bad as it sounds, I promise! I'm doing it now!) or giving up some little luxuries for longterm goals.
One caveat: Dave does not believe in credit cards, at all. In this economy, you need good credit to get a good rate on a mortgage (really the only kind of debt he deems okay) so if you go this route, really keep on top of your credit and build it every chance you get!
Its incredible how simple Ramsey can make complicated problems. The debt snowball is a beautiful example of this. I really felt like he was on my side with the debt problem I had. I realized in this book, you ever get better or bitter, you either stop spending, or you start making more, there are no other choices. This is a good book for that. He's a brilliant guy in a lot of ways, and this book has helped my whole family (I gave it to all my family members for christmas!) The basic points? Don't spend more than you make, pay off credit cards with secured debt first, and a HELOC is worse than a HEL. Its true!
This is a great book as an overview of basic financial concepts. His explanation of the "debt snowball" is one of the fundamental concepts of debt reduction. The debt snowball is basically paying off the smallest debt you have first, applying what you had been paying on that debt to the next smallest debt and so on until they are all paid off. This also leads to "snowflaking" finding small quantities of money that can be applied to your debt snowball. This book is a good first financial concepts book.
If you have debt or think you need a financial check up this is the book for you! This plan is an excellent way to get out of debt, get an emergency fund, build wealth and most of all quit living paycheck to paycheck!
We started this plan with $46,000 in non mortgage debt and a smaller income. We now are debt free and have three months in an emergency fund savings account. If we can do it anyone can!! I have bought copies of this book for multiple friends to help them change their financial well being. I feel that strongly about this great plan!!
Dave Ramsey spells the way out for you in very simple but effective "baby steps". On baby step builds on the next baby step.
Learn how to break the consumer debt cycle forever and still get the "goodies and toys" you want in your life. The best part though is learning to have financial security. That is priceless!
Just like the gym tests your physical fitness The Total Money Makeover Workbook: A Perfect Plan for Financial Fitness helps you to strengthen you financial fitness. Due to the fact I hate any book that will make me have to devote writing and thinking time to it, I really didn't think I would enjoy The Total Money Makeover Workbook: A Perfect Plan for Financial Fitness but I actually did. You can work on what is pressing in your current financial situation and always go back later to do other exercises. That made this book another plus for me. Because you have a workbook you can actually see you financial progress as well as see the errors of your thinking regarding finances. It is a good start on the road to financial freedom but you must be ready for the workout...it isn't easy but the benefits can save your financial life!
