Modern medicine is touting the benefits of meditation. Doctors are prescribing it for a variety of stress-related diseases. Meditation brings balance into our lives, providing an oasis of profound rest and renewal. In Meditation for Starters, J. Donald Walters offers simple but powerful guidelines for attaining inner peace. Just a few of the techniques you'll learn include:
* Preparing the body and mind for meditation
* Physical, mental and psychological relaxation
* Breathing techniques
* Ways to focus, concentrate, and "let go"
* Developing superconscious awareness
* Sharpening your concentration and willpower
* Increasing your intuition, developing calmness
* Powerful visualizations
This is a book for long-time meditators as well as beginners. It is also "for starters" in the secondary sense that all of life's activities are enhanced if they are started with meditation.
Meditation for Starters is available as a book/CD or book/cassette set and each item is available separately.
I actually coupled this book with the use of aromatherapy, and it seemed to work pretty well. College/work life hit me hard so I instantly looked for some method of calming myself after each day. This book helped me to discover how to "mentally" calm myself. Physically calming myself was easy, just sprawl out on a bed! But for me, mentally calming myself was difficult because I found myself thinking of everything that went on during the day, everything I have to do for tomorrow, and sometimes what I have to do in the near future. This reading helps to calm you down, and I learned that you have to "prepare" for meditation just as much as actually carrying it out. Through the use of visualizations, you can visually calm your nerves and your spirit. The reading itself helps to calm you down almost as actually carrying out the activities!
Meditation seems like it would be really simple, and at its heart it is. But when I first started I wasn't exactly sure how to go about it. The methods in this book are really simple and easy to follow but are still really effective. Meditating has become an every day part of my life now and I've seen great benefit to my emotional, mental and physical well-being. This would be a great book for anyone who wants to discover meditation.
A few months ago my neighbor lent me this book when we were talking about being a mom and all the stressful things that come with the "MOM" job. She recommended this book to me being I am actually a high stress person who is constantly worried about all the choices in which my children seem to be making these days, being a mom of 7 children is far from easy and to top it off, I seem to be taking on all their luggage, good and bad. I knew years ago this was very unhealthy for me but had no clue what to do to make things better for me. Now that I have read this book I've learned that meditation really does help in a positive way. This book is about learning how to find you, how to let go of all the daily stresses that come with daily life activities, no matter if it's job related, marriage related, or being mom related. What ever your stress may be, I believe this book will help in letting go of some of these everyday life stresses, and how to become a more positive person by not be so stressed out everyday.
I am a firm believer in meditation, I think it brings out the thoughts that are trapped behind all the layers that the world puts on you. It takes off your "mom" layer, your "best friend" layer, your "job" layer and you are just you, at your core. Who is that? Is it hard to look at that person? Being someone who commonly prays to God, the theories here are really similar, they just aren't focused on God, but a clean state of mind. I think its refreshing to feel empty of thoughts, but being so used to praying to God instead of...basically myself, it was hard to try to do that. Anyway, thats not part of the book, but for those who are used to praying, this book points out some great techniques to clear your mind, but as far as the meditation, it can be hard to divorce yourself from prayer.
I recently bought this book along with the CD and am very impressed so far. I have a stressful life (three children, sports, school activities, etc.) and am also an anxious person by nature. I have recognized for a long time that the stress I carry has an impact on my mental and physical health, but this is the first step I have taken to do something about it.
The book is excellent for beginners, because meditation is not as easy for high strung people like myself! Since practicing the techniques daily, I feel better and more relaxed. I have noticed that I do not automatically feel stressed out when faced with an obstacle. My children and husband have noticed a big difference in my behavior as well.
The book is easy to follow, informative, and fun to read. I love meditating and am amazed at the impact it has already had on my life! Great book!
I purchased both the book and CD about 2 weeks ago. This wasn't my first try at meditation and learning technique, however, I had always felt as though I wasn't truly relaxed in previous attempts. Donald Waiters book and audio made it very easy for me to concentrate on my breathing techniques and achieve that full relaxation state of mind that I had been attempting for so long!
This book is the perfect companion for those just learning how to mediate, or even the longtime student of meditation. The different techniques and methods described in the book and the calming sensation of the audio are a great pairing and resource to utilize.
I find myself consistently accessing both resources in order to deepen my concentration and improve my breathing techniques. After recently quitting smoking I find the deep breathing taught in this book much more satisfying than a nicotine fix!
In this book, Walters teaches a meditation technique that was brought to America in the 1920's from India. This is an ancient meditation technique "hong-sau" that brings you to a state of deep calmness and great peace.Walters begins by giving a great talk on what meditation is, how to do it, and why. He speaks simply, clearly, and practically. This video has a unique uplifting quality. This "concentration" technique when practiced deeply instills in one a tremendous sense of peace and calmness. The author, Doanld Walters, has been meditating and teaching meditation for over 50 years. From the deep calm in his voice to the bright sparkle in his eyes you can see and feel that this man lives what he teaches. Part One includes a talk by Walters on meditation.The second part is a guided visualization, also narrated by Walters. His voice is so soothing and relaxing--its the kind of voice you wish was on every guided meditation tape. Of course, it isn't very easy to create compelling visuals to go with a guided meditation, but I think the video succeeds admirably with its blend of enchanting environmental scenes and images. The book is concise, accessible and immediately useful--perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to meditate quickly and effectively.
