When Panic Attacks: The New, Drug-Free Anxiety Therapy That Can Change Your Life by David D. Burns

Are you plagued by fears, phobias, or panic attacks? Do you toss and turn at night with a knot in your stomach, worrying about your job, your family, work, your health, or relationships? Do you suffer from crippling shyness, obsessive doubts, or feelings of insecurity?
What you may not realize is that these fears are almost never based on reality. Anxiety is one of the world’s oldest cons. When you’re anxious, you’re actually fooling yourself. You are telling yourself things that simply aren’t true. See if you can recognize yourself in any of these distortions:
All-or-Nothing Thinking: “My mind will go blank when I give my presentation at work, and everyone will think I’m an idiot.”
Fortune Telling: “I just know I’ll freeze up and blow it when I take my test.”
Mind Reading: “Everyone at this party can see how nervous I am.”
Magnification: “Flying is so dangerous. I think this plane is going to crash!”
Should Statements: “I shouldn’t be so anxious and insecure. Other people don’t feel this way.”
Emotional Reasoning: “I feel like I’m on the verge of cracking up!”
Self-Blame: “What’s wrong with me? I’m such a loser!”
Mental Filter: “Why can’t I get anything done? My life seems like one long procrastination.”
Now imagine what it be like to live a life that’s free of worries and self-doubt; to go to sleep at night feeling peaceful and relaxed; to overcome your shyness and have fun with other people; to give dynamic presentationswithout worrying yourself sick ahead of time; to enjoy greater creativity, productivity and self-confidence.
Does that sound impossible? The truth is you can defeat your fears.

I've been having panic attacks since I was about seven. I've been to doctors and psychiatrists, and no one could make them better. My husband bought me this book some years ago, and it's one I've read countless times since. Getting through a panic attack isn't easy, but this book laid out some pretty clear methods for riding it out and lessening the severity.

What I love is that the book puts the success in my hands. Panic is my body's reaction to a (mis) perceived danger, but I learned that I don't have to let my fear of what's happening run away with me. The exercises for recognizing the fear when it comes on, acknowledging it, and then letting it go was one of the most helpful things I've ever read on the subject. It doesn't always work, unfortunately, but every little bit counts. This will always be one of my favorites.

I have suffered from anxiety since I was five years old. It has haunted my life and made simple things hard to do. I've been on different medications and have always hated it. I never felt like myself while taking some pill that is supposed to "help" me live an anxiety free life.
Recently I started therapy for my anxiety and the first thing out of my mouth was "I don't want to be on any more pills." I wanted off of them.
I went looking for a therapist that didn't push drugs on people and was very lucky to find one.
My therapist recommended this book to me on my third session and I was willing to read it because I really didn't want to take anything anymore.
As I started reading the book I started to realize something. I could do this. I had everything that I needed to help to control my anxiety problem right there inside of me.
I would recommend this book to others that have fought anxiety in their life. It may not help everyone but I would at least read it.

This is a good book for people embarking on a course of treatment for anxiety and/or panic. It explains how our thoughts channel into emotions, and helps people to be more aware of their thoughts, and how their thoughts lead to anxiety and panic. The book also has some good information on relaxation. I have, however, seen this same information in so many books that it appears to be regurgitating the same information that has already been available for quite some time. For me, this book was a waste of time, because I've already read the same information in many different places, and Burns does not add anything different or new to the equation. But if a beginner is looking to learn about coping with anxiety and panic, this is a good place to start. You may not be able to stop taking medication, but the techniques and information in this book may be able to help you control panic that occurs while on medication.

As someone who has been diagnosed with and is being medically treated for anxiety/panic disorder, this book's title caught my attention immediately. I am a vegetarian and am really into holistic healing and natural remedies whenever they can possibly be used. This book helped me to find ways to help myself naturally (i.e. meditation, sleep remedies, etc.). I have not been able to stop taking my medication, but the medication now works more effectively for me, as I use the methods that were suggested in this book. Not all of the methods spoke to me and some of the book was a little out of reach for me, but for the most part I would recommend this read to anyone who has struggled with mild to moderate panic and anxiety. If you are open to alternative healing practices and self-healing practices, as well as traditional suggestions, this is a book you would get a lot out of.

You're Not Alone!

Anyone who has struggled with Anxiety knows how crippling the effects can be. I originally was introduced to writing from Dr. David D. Burns as a young adult. Dr. Burns had helped me through treatment for depression in my earlier years. In my mid to late twenties I started suffering from Panic Attacks. My life changed as I knew it. There were days I wouldn't leave my house. I changed my traffic pattern to and from work in fear I would be stuck in traffic and stranded. I had previously been stuck in traffic and thought I was having a heart attack. I went to the emergency room three times before I bought this book. This book was written about me. The stories and experiences I could relate to. It was soothing and inspired me to do more. It has a step approach to overcoming your fears.

I can say I learned a lot from this experience. Most importantly I learned that I am not alone. With Panic Attacks you feel alone. I'm happy to say I can travel and drive freely again. I have dealt with my fears and am living an active life again. This is a great book to help you with your Panic Attacks. Remember you're not alone.
