Barbara Sher is one of my favorite self-help authors and this book was my introduction to her work. It has been around for a while but the information is pretty timeless. Barbara's down-to-earth writing style is perfect for relaying her ideas to the average person stuck in a rut. Barbara herself is not a glamour girl making the rounds of the self-help circuit, dazzling the crowds with glitz and shallow dreams. No, she has good credentials, a good career foundation and many years of experience coaching people in making productive changes. Just reading the book may not change your life, but if you are ready for a new direction and you really work the exercises laid out here, it can get the wheels spinning in your head. And that's what it's all about. Only you can put yourself on a different path, and if you need help doing that, Barbara will make suggestions, based on your own interests, and soon you'll be looking at options for the future you didn't realize were there. Barbara also gives you motivation, by means of real-life examples, to push yourself into exploring those options. If you're ready for a change, this book will help get you started.

I had first seen Barbara Sher on PBS and she reminded me of an aunt of mine. So soft spoken but yet no-nonsense. What I got out of this book was a few things that I have incorporated into my life. Everyone is different and there is enough in this book for everyone to find some truth that just hits home. One of the things I recall is Ms. Sher's reference to you have to make room in your life to let new things into it. In order for you to get what you really want, you have to not only figure our what that is(which she helps you on that!) but you quite literally and figuratively have to make space for it in your life. One of her suggestions that I will always remember is for you to go through your house and find 25 things to give away. Simply give them away. It sounds kind of silly, but this simple act did something to me and not just cleared some physical clutter, but some brain clutter too. Highly suggest that you read this as well and you will get something out of it too.

Barbara Sher knows her own mind. She introduces her theory of how uncertainty of our careers starts as if there is no other possibility. Though it is an adequate theory, I disagree that that is the only option or that it is always the single option. I think it depends more from person to person on personal experiences and so forth.

I think the title of the book was also a bit misleading to me. I was struggling at the time to figure out what I wanted to be doing with my life - whether I was really in the right field for me and if not where to go from there. The title suggested to me that she could somehow make suggestions on finding out what my "dream job" could be. Instead, she asks ME what my "dream job" is - a question I don't know how to answer. The rest of the book is based off of this "dream job" that is not yet existent to me.

If you are looking to reach a ream job that is already in your head, this is a good book for you. However, if you are looking for help in finding answers, find something else. A good book, but not right for me.

I Could do Anything if I Only Knew what it Was provides practical common sense guide for determining what career you should decide on. In other words it helps you discover what makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning. It is very well written and has many great chapters about what may be holding you back from realizing your full potential. The woman who wrote this really knew exactly what she was doing. Take her advice, which is specific and goal oriented. Her exercises are difficult but they help solve dilemmas in finding direction in life. The book is informative, refreshing and extremely useful. There are many rich topics for anyone who isn't sure what he/she wants to be when he/she grows up! Some of the topics are: What are you suppose to be doing? Fear of Success: Leaving the Ones You Love Behind, I Want too Many Things, I'm all over the Map, Help! I'm not Ready to be Born Yet, How to Live an Extraordinary Life and much more. Ms. Sher takes you through a series of exercises to help you identify your current state of mind, what might be holding you back from pursuing your true ambitions, and how to combat that fear. All of Barbara Sher's books are an excellent vehicle for stimulating change, but many people will need a life coach to move through the change process.
