The co-author of Get Out of Your Own Way goes on-the-job.
Whether it's a simple breach of etiquette or fear of learning new things, expecting too much from employees or failure to delegate, self-defeating behavior is the most common reason people put their jobs and reputations in jeopardy. In quick, to-the-point chapters, Goulston explains that if a professional does one or more of the following, they're getting in their own way-and limiting their success:
- Expecting thier boss to appreciate them
- Letting fear of failure paralyze them
- Procrastinating and wasting time
- Making excuses and getting defensive
- Failing to delegate
- Fearing performance reviews (either giving them or getting them)
Covering 40 of the most common self-defeating behaviors, this new book shows how to change behaviors-from self-defeating to career-enhancing.
Get out of your own way at work is not a self help book that will take you by the hand and guide you through baby steps on what you need to do. It will however provide insights on how to be better in business by identifying self defeating behaviors we do as humans in life and of course business. If you are in business and are not reaching your full potential this book will open your eyes to what you are doing to keep you from success. It’s not only important to identify the behaviors that hinder our success, but it is also important to know how to change them. Being a small business owner, I want to be as successful as I can and for me one way to increase my success is through knowledge. I read lots of books on finance, business, investing, etc and from each one I take something. The book provides instruction and bottom line comments at the end of each chapter, in case you miss the point. After reading this book, if you actually get it, you will definitely see a change in the way you conduct your self and find more success in all areas of your life, not just work, I know I have.
There are no "quick fixes" in this book! Just common sense practical approaches that REALLY work. This is the first self-help book that I have read from cover to cover and go back to review one or more chapters when I find myself falling back in to old habits. I saw myself in so many of the pages that I had to keep going back and review to make sure they had not written this book about me not just for me!
Goulston & Goldberg show a gift for finding language that is easy to relate to and through quotes, usable insights and action plans, providing the reader with the foundation for change.
For anyone who REALLY wants to get to the nuts and bolts about how self-sabotage is hurting him/her, this book is a true God send!
One of the biggest anti-mircomanagement books I've read and one that changed my life forever. When I first got into business I thought I knew best. I thought if everything was done the way I saw fit, it would all be perfect. With such leaders like Donald Trump and Steve Wynn, I saw them as basically dictators and I thought I could lead in the same way. WRONG. If you thought like that, read this book. This shows you the error of the small business ways and can help you grow to 5-10 times your current size. It requires synergy and it requires you to get out of the way and let your employees do what they are paid to do. You always win out when people have the freedom and creativity to do what they are good at.
