Though many might say that this book is merely a memoir, it is also a behind-the-scenes look into how Steve Martin crafts his comedic genius. It is also a deep and startling look into his bittersweet journey to success and his relationship with his father.
I've been a huge fan of his fiction - "Shopgirl" and "In the Pleasure of My Company" - for some time. I often times wish he would just write as fast as I can read them. I had low expectations for his non-fiction, but I read "Born Standing Up" in one sitting, over an entire Sunday afternoon. He is so charming and funny and sad that it is difficult to leave him. This book made me think a lot about my own life. What makes me tick, and where I'm going.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, whether looking for pure fun and entertainment, or something a little more soulful. This book has it all. It is an instant classic that is oftentimes Chaplin-esque, and will surely haunt readers for years to come.
Awesome review. It's always great to find a book that not only gets you to soul search, but even gets you to laugh! Will have to check this one out.
Thanks for the very detailed and informative review. I love Steve Martin and only learned recently that he was a writer after watching "Shop Girl" the movie. I will check this out! Thanks!
Now that I am on the hunt for a humorous book, this review caught my eye. I have always liked Steve Martin. I agree with Knits of Love, too, that it is great to find a funny book that will help you learn something about yourself.
