Often when I am at a restaurant or visiting friends who have children, I observe that when it comes time to serving them a healthy meal, it's like declaring a health food war. I picked up Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food primarily out of curiousity due to the title and found it to be a very sneaky but probably sucessful tool in getting your child to eat healthy foods. It teaches the parent the art of disguising food. I am sure it is helpful however how will the child ever learn to appreciate a certain food if they never know they have tried it? It is something that could backfire and I can't help to see that happening. If I went and told my daughter, I know you like carrots because you eat them all the time, I am doing good because she is eating them but heck she can't identify with eating them at all so I am the one losing. My goal is to have the child truly love the food. I must admit the chocolate chip cookie recipe is a unique one.
As a behavioral science specialist, I have to agree with you. The concept of sneaking around to get your child to eat is essentially an example of your child modifying your behavior! I can see that the approach of incorporating different, interesting foods into common foods might work well if started at an early age and done openly. In other words, let the child know you are adding cauliflower to the eggs and see how you do it while they are still young enough to accept everything you do! :D
