The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do about It by Michael E. Gerber

In this first new and totally revised edition of the over two million copy bestseller, The E-Myth, Michael Gerber dispels the myths surrounding starting your own business and shows how commonplace assumptions can get in the way of running a business. Next, he walks you through the steps in the life of a business -- from entrepreneurial infancy through adolescent growing pains to the mature entrepreneurial perspective: the guiding light of all businesses that succeed -- and shows how to apply the lessons of franchising to any business, whether it is a franchise or not. Finally, Gerber draws the vital, often overlooked distinction between working on your business and working in your business. After you have read The E-Myth Revisited, you will truly be able to grow your business in a predictable and productive way.

This book was quite interesting in that it totally broke down everything about e commerce. I recently started blogging and was totally oblivious on how to attract people to my site. After reading this book I learned that there are many things that you can do to increase traffic on your site. I especially was interested in how Gerber totally broke down all the factors involved in entrepreneurship. With the use of growth stages I was able to see first hand how business is cultivated reared and ultimately left to function. For me this book was eye opening because it did not push and pedal all of the rhetoric that other business books tend to do. It brought forth fresh ideas that are totally helpful. As a result from this book my e-commerce traffic has increased by 20%. By this book because it is totally innovative.

The E-Myth Revisited is a great book that clears up the cloud of mystique that surrounds entrepreneurship. I, perhaps like most people, have always assumed that it was something you were either born with or had to go to school for. For normal folk like me, it was out of reach. Others, perhaps, see it as an easy thing. After all, they are already good at what they do, why not be their own boss and let their skills work for themselves?

For me in the first group, the book states that the concept is nothing otherworldly. It is possible to be an entrepreneur, but don’t just jump into it. This is the mistake of the second group. They soon find that they are doing five jobs instead of one, and the love they had for their skillset soon becomes a burden.

I won’t spoil the outcome. But the author takes a level-headed approach that can inspire any of us. I have not jumped in with both feet, but after reading the book I have a greater appreciation for what might be involved. Furthermore, I see opportunities where previously I was blind, or else would have just shrugged my shoulders. The book will guide you if you have the slightest inclination to begin your own company.

With e-myth, entrepreneurs have it laid out in a paint by numbers sort of way. The challenge is to be able to implement the wisdom in the context of your business.

Being an entrepreneur myself, I had this thing about 'controlling' the operations. Most often not realising that that's why the operations were limited in their capacity. So when Gerber drew out the proven path, it was quite wonderous. I think one read of e-myth would be a no-brainer for any entrepreneur.

On the flip side, e-myth is not as engaging as other books of its genre... Robert Kiyosaki's Cashflow Quadrant, for instance quotes e-myth and takes off from there. Take a shot at it anyway!

This book, for those who don't know, was written by Donald Trump's right hand man. He's a genius. The reason small businesses fail? They can't manage growth fast enough, or they didn't have a good enough idea to see them through the hard times. This book is ALL about systems. Once you can do something, you can measure its benefit or validity, and then make a mechanized system to let someone else do it. If you're the business owner, you better not be trying to do all the parts of the business. Make a system, a defined string of events, and then hire someone to do it. You make more money 100% of the time and its the only way to grow your business successfully everytime. This is business 101 and a must for business owners.
