Sensible advice and proven strategies on everything from getting out of debt and paying less on taxes and loans to buying and selling real estate and paying for your children's education.
Personal Finance for Dummies is the perfect book for anyone with little or no knowledge on the subject. The book is really written for those who need an introduction on the subject. For those of you with personal finance knowledge, I don’t recommend it as you will find yourself saying I know this already. For those of you that have trouble understanding certain financial terms, you will also find the explanations very clear and easy to understand. It does repeat information several time in the same chapter, which can be bothersome, but it is a For Dummies series and it does take some awhile to master the information. For those of you with teenagers I highly recommend you give this to them and have the read it as an introduction to build on for personal finance. The chapters are easy to read and broken down so you only have to read the chapters that relate to your life. Don’t read this thinking you will find in-depth information as it is an introduction.
Like most of the "Dummies" books, this one on personal finance lays out concepts in clear prose and provides tools to help you complete the tasks involved in managing your money. I think this book could help a lot of people by putting organization around their desire to stay out of debt and save for the big things.
However, I was still left puzzled about how I would actually calculate my monthly expenses. It did not seem like I could predict how much anything other than my rent would cost from month to month. I honestly could not find the time to track my expenses either. With an extremely active and demanding four year old and an ill wife, I'm lucky to take a shower every couple of days. I suppose my situation is not average.
I wished that the book would have addressed some of these life issues surrounding the complexity of managing money in addition to the nuts and bolts of financial tasks themselves.
What a great book to cover all the financial basics. My children will all have a copy of this book when they leave home. The advice is broken down to the most basic of terms and there is a definition to go along with it.
It covers all the way from the basics of a checking account and savings to Investments.
The author gives you the pitfalls to lookout for in every type of financial transaction or situation. There is also a section on cutting costs. Some suggestions may be a little extreme for some but it gets you thinking.
Great book to learn the basics and more!
