I think the biggest part of it is how they were brought up. If it was taboo in their households, then it can stay that way with them. Although this is a circular answer, people are uptight about it because others are uptight about it because others are uptight about it etc etc etc. Since it's one of the most personal of all subjects, I doubt the majority of people will loosen up about it anytime soon.
