Help! My closet is out of control. I have clothes in there I haven't worn in years. I want to clean it out and get organized, but have no clue where to begin. What's the best way to get started?

Look at your closet like you would your lawn. Regular maintenance is the only way to keep everything under control. So, you must weed it. This is a process I call purging. It means removing from your wardrobe unworn, worn out, and out-of-date clothing on a regular basis. I suggest that you purge your wardrobe four times a year and keep an item no longer than three years. if you want to keep things fresh, fun, and reminiscent of the evolution of you and who you are today, you must take the time to purge your wardrobe. Purging your wardrobe four times a year is the best method to part ways with items that aren't working for you. You'll find out what looks don't work for you. Purging will also help you develop a "stylist's eye" and break you of your binging or non-shopping habit....

...Let's say it's winter. I recommend you purge in January. Here's why: resale stores are selling what's in season now. Purge to find the clothing in your closet that can still be sold. At the same time, your favorite stores are preparing for the next season. You have recycled your old clothing into money at the resale or consignment shop, and now you can eco-selfishly buy for the next season.

This may seem overwhelming, but give yourself some credit. If you stick with this system, you'll be purging, selling, and shopping all at the same time. With practice, you'll get it down.

Perpetually. I truly believe a clean closet is a process. I work on mine ten minutes at a time. And you have to be ruthless with yourself. I bought the cutest little jacket yesterday, and what a bargain! I tried to wear it today. I tried nine different ways from Sunday to make that thing work, but it just wasn’t me. It was super cute, but not me. So it has to go back. At least it’s not going to end up like the other one that I bought, held onto for a year, and even altered before I was able to admit was just not me. Be ruthless!
