This Darn Pain in My Neck

What's up with me and PeopleJam on weekend nights? But, hey, RT, if you are out there, this one's for you, babe! (I tried to reply by the way, but somethin's up with PJ and it would not allow me to add my reply...hope this is good enough!).

So, as you all know now, I don't go out much. It's kinda funny because I've always been left-brained, quite the analytical one. What's even more hilarious about that is I always figured me to be creative since I love to sing, dance, and occasionally write poetry. Now, I realize my creativity is more like momentary lapses in an effort to break the mundane world of analysis. In other words, I've just been psyching myself out that I am expressive.

Anyway, today I hung out with my friend who just moved back to Los Angeles from the Bahamas. We had this idea that we would go to this metaphysical store in Glendale so we could check out crystals and possibly get our ears coned (yeah, you read that right).

We show up to this joint, walk inside and well the Chi (Qi) was pretty funky! Now, I don't know about you but isn't a metaphysical store with concept of healing and wellness supposed to have good Chi? For a gal who doesn't get out much I cannot afford bad chi!

My friend asks the gal behind the counter about the ear coning gig. She said the lady who does wasn't around but that we could call her. We then asked where the nearest "cute" coffee house was and she told us about the Starbuck's one block down in a huge strip mall. We took our chances.

Once arriving at Starbuck's, I honestly believe it had better Chi than the metaphysical get-up. The coning lady gives us a call back and to put it lightly, my friend said she sounded cranky. Hmmm....

We head back where my friend gets her ears lit on fire first while I pick up a great book on Reiki while listening to the water fountain nearby. Okay, I think I am settling in; maybe this place has good Chi afterall.

About an hour later, my friend walks down the wooden stairs and I have to admit, she is looking radiant. "It was amazing!" falls from her lips and I am dashing up the stairs to see what this is all about.

Enter, dare I, into the practioner's room who is well, cranky! I decided to make excuses for her like, "It is Saturday...it's near the end of the day...maybe she's tired" as I lay onto the bed. We have a discussion about the history of my ears (hee, hee) and she proceeds to stick the cone down my canal and we're off to Chi heaven or so I think.

Forty-five minutes later, I wake up from hearing myself hum in my sleep (I do this from time-to-time when I first fall asleep; hey, do any of you do this?I would love to know what this is about! My mom does it, too!) while the cone is still in my ear. Either that or it was the practioner's crankiness barging in.

Session over. I tell her the girl downstairs told me I could pay by using my Visa debit. The practioner's response, "Oh, she did, did she?" Immediately I thought, "Oh boy, this can't be good," as the Catholic guilt overwhelms me. "Yes, she did. Was that wrong?" "Yes, it was, we are separate companies."

Well, fortunately, I was still allowed to pay downstairs with my debit and sadly (or was it), I was not able to tip.

As I sit here and type, I have the worst "stress" pain in my neck. You know why, I let my Chi get disrupted by somebody else's negative energy or the story I created about them and their world.

How often do you do this?

I find that sometimes we set up an expectation and when it is not met, we are disappointed and for me, that can translate into stress instead of curiosity which is far more positive and healthy. If I were curious about the coning practioner's world and learned about her story maybe I wouldn't be sitting here before you tonight with a pain in my neck!

Bottom line: For good Chi try curiosity.

Till next time!

Hi Coach Laurie,

I enjoy reading about your adventures. You've introduced me to something new. I have to tell you, "ear coning" is something that I have no clue about. What on earth is it? Sounds like the Coneheads.

What is ear coning? Did it work? Did you like the results? Would you recommend it?

Tell us more about ear coning. Please, we're all ears. Heh heh.

With all of my air travel as a consultant, on top of a lot of swimming, for a short time a few years back I developed a chronically plugged left ear. I used an ear cone several times, and it was one of several factors that helped clear it up. But coning is really much less about removing ear wax than removing toxins that collect in the ear. The smoke and heat do that, and the cone itself is typically permeated with other substances that theoretically are smoked out of your ear and then bond on the cone. Not something I've needed to try again, but at the time it seemed to help.

Glad to know the coning worked for you and thanks for the information you shared here! I had no idea this little blog would turn into such a great discussion : D
