Spring is in the air and many parts of the country are emerging from the grasp of Old Man Winter. It’s time to change your exercise routine and get some fresh air!

If you live in a part of the country that gets extremely hot and humid as spring becomes summer, timing is everything! I learned from Floridians that outside exercise works year-round at the right hour in the day. Golf courses were jam-packed at the 5:00 and 6:00 am tee times. Trails and beaches were full of walkers and runners just after sunrise. Bicyclists would hit the streets just as the sun began its descent. In the early morning and early evening hours are the best times to exercise outdoors in hot climates, humid or dry.

Exercise that almost always works is that which you do in the water. Surfing and swimming work nearly every time of the day, regardless of temperature. Of course, the caveat is to make sure you have sun protection on. Even those who tan easily can get sun poisoning if they are exposed – trust me on this one.

The PSA for this is to make sure you don’t overdo it. If you are not accustomed to exercising outdoors, don’t wait until the warmest months of the year to start. Ease yourself in, wear sun protection, and stay hydrated.

What other ideas do you have for outdoor exercise in warmer weather?
