It seems like everyone with a blog and an opinion is giving you advice on how to be green today. Yeah, it’s all the rage – eco friendly, go green, environmentally friendly, etc. It really is a worthwhile cause and can be integrated into your daily life before you know it. The added bonus is many green tricks will save you money also!
You don’t have to run out and buy a Toyota Prius. Many times, the perception is that it is costly to be green and that you have to go out and buy new things. Not so! Instead of trying to go buy a new car, take care of the one you have! Keep your tires inflated, maintenance up, and take alternative transportation when you can. This will save gas, money, and the environment.
You don’t have to buy new grocery bags. There is no law that says you must use the fancy bag that has the store name on the store you are shopping in. Any reusable bag will do! Nearly everyone has a few of those tan colored bags that we got for free at some event or work function.
Try consignment and thrift stores for clothing. Instead of buying new from a department or specialty store, buy used. This will also save you money! Another trick is to not buy anything unless you actually need it. Yeah, this is really hard for many of us who are shopaholics for sure. Think about it though, take care of what you have and make it last. You know - the old trick about buying solid colors and less ornate, less trendy clothes that last for many years. It works! You can also set up a swap with your friends.
Stop buying bottled water! Have tap at the restaurant and use tap or delivery at home. I carry around a refillable water container that I fill at home and it works out just fine! This also saves money!
Forget about paper towels and disposable napkins. If you don’t have kitchen towels and reusable napkins, the dollar store is an excellent place to score these. Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and other discounters also have higher-quality choices for cheap.
Stop using shower gel and switch to an environmentally-friendly bar soap. Use a washcloth to get a good lather and you’ll really like it. Gels and foams are packed in larger plastic containers that waste more resources than a bar. Stores like The Body Shop usually have specials and different scents for men and women. This will also save you some money!
