HOMoLESS Holidays

Where do you spend your holidays? Some spend it with family, others with friends. Whoever it is, just remember how lucky and how thankful you should be! Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a place to go or somewhere to call home.

This year I was all by myself in Los Angeles. I have no family out here. On thanksgiving, I spent the morning volunteering at the homeless shelter before I went into work. I know what your thinking now, "wtf, this kid is doing something else besides pro-creating and boozing". Yes, I do spend a big amount of time helping out with social issues.

So you ask "what motivated you to do this?" Im glad you asked. Well, I can honestly thank Derek Zoolander for the motivation. I am hugely into fashion and love Derek Zoolander. A few weeks ago, I was watching Derek strut himself down the runway during his "Derelicte" runway performance (before he tried killing the the Prime Minister of Malaysia).

The whole runway show was based upon the homeless of NYC. It made me view homeless in a new light. They are not just there because they are too lazy to work, but to start new trends and make a fashion statement. So if I work with them its kinda fashionable, you know? And its great practice just in case I decide to be homeless some day. Back to volunteering.

I went to the shelter and saw life in a new perspective. Whole families where homeless, druggies, war vets and kids come in to get off the streets. Everyone and anyone that couldn't afford to have a normal thanksgiving feast was there. I gave food, hugs, and shed tears. It was such a great experience and definitely made me thankful for everything I have. I live such a great life out here in LA and I thank God everday for it. For my family, friends and loved ones, even though im not sitting there at the dinner table with you, you all are still in my mind thoughts and prayers.

The best way to spend your holidays is off the beaten path. Take the whole family out and volunteer, do something different for you holidays this year. It's just as good to give as it is to receive.

This is a great post, M. It's cool to see another side of you. When I read your previous blog posts, I could tell you were a perceptive and witty writer. Now it's cool to see that you've got a big heart, too. Keep writing more! You are great.

...the attitude of gratitude. Way cool! Thanks for sharing your heartfelt reminder to give from the heart and to be grateful. Your experience really puts things into perspective and I appreciate you sharing it....especially since the holidays can be a time of depression and sadness for some.
