Four years after my mother died of breast cancer, I made a doctor’s appointment because of recurrent illnesses. My immune system was a wreck; I had frequent flus, colds, and unsightly cold sores. My cholesterol was well over 200. I was anemic, chronically fatigued, and about twenty pounds over my ideal weight. I had recurring bouts with depression, and my energy was imbalanced. I was either up really high, or down really low, but rarely ever feeling centered or steady. I felt miserable and looked like crap. Especially, with a blistering cold sore on my lip every other week. Ugh!
The doctor took blood tests and informed me I had thyroid disease, and it was the main cause of my many ailments. The conventional medical cure was to take radioactive iodine to terminate my malfunctioning thyroid, and then a prescription medication called synthroid (synthetic thyroid hormone) for the rest of my life.
Red flags went up! I did not want to destroy any part of my body with radiation and then be chained to a drug for the rest of my life. As a witness to the dreadful effects of radiation on my mother’s body, the thought of taking radioactive iodine, or radioactive anything, repulsed me.
I informed the doctor I would not go the conventional medical route, but was going to heal my thyroid using natural foods instead. The doctor told me it was “impossible,” and the thyroid could not be healed through changing the diet.
I knew the doctor was just confirming what she had been taught by modern medicine about healing the thyroid… or more appropriately, what she hadn’t been taught. I stood firm in my decision because I wanted to heal my body, not harm it, and believed I was better off with all of my body parts intact to be able to achieve the goal. Giving my body proper fuel and energy to heal itself, instead of destroying it, resonated deeply inside me as the way to reclaim my health.
At the time of my diagnosis, a day in the life of Andrea Beaman consisted of two cups of coffee with nutrasweet and skim milk, and a bagel with nothing on it to start the day, a slice of pizza or a salad for lunch, fat-free frozen yogurt as a snack, a handful of pretzels and jellybeans, or a little bit of chocolate or other candy, and of course, more coffee in the afternoon because I needed the caffeine to help me make it through the day. I was a nutritionally deficient, fast food and junk food junkie, and I was feeding my body a steady disease-promoting diet.
When my wake-up call came, I answered it, and was ready to make the necessary changes to transform my health. I had to! I had no desire to let modern medicine go to war on my body as they did to my mom.
I radically altered my diet to include whole foods: whole grains beans, a wide variety of vegetables, sea vegetables, seafood, animal protein, good fats, nuts, seeds, and seasonal fruits. Four weeks after transitioning my diet my face glowed with renewed health and vitality. I had no facial blemishes, and none of those nasty cold sores popped up to ruin my life. My eyes were bright and alert and my energy levels surged and remained constant without the use of coffee or stimulants. I was feeding my body a steady stream of better quality food, instead of starving it by restricting or limiting my intake to lose weight and I naturally lost 10-12 pounds without even trying. Each day, I was growing more confident that this new way of eating was having a positive effect on my body.
After four months I returned to the doctor for another blood test, and the results showed my thyroid hormones had changed too! The doctor now warned that although the thyroid hormone had changed dramatically from where it was, it was still malfunctioning. She said my disease was not yet cured.
My thyroid continued to change. It went from hyperthyroid to hypothyroid, and one doctor informed me I had Hashimoto’s disease (another thyroid dysfunction). Every doctor I visited recommended prescription medication for my condition, and every time I declined the medicine. I changed doctors three times in search of someone that would offer another option besides drugs. I intuitively felt that my body would eventually find a healthy state and if I were to chemically intervene during that process it would have hindered my body’s ability to heal itself.
Eventually, I stopped seeing doctors altogether because I felt they couldn’t offer me much in the way of healing besides the medication I refused to take. So, I kept cooking and eating, and cooking and eating, for two years straight. And, I felt better and better with every wholesome, delicious nutrient rich meal.
I committed to my health and consistently gave my body the energetic fuel (food), and other tools (physical exercise, emotional and spiritual work) it needed to heal. It took a little over two years for that health-promoting regimen to work, but it eventually did. My thyroid healed. Vibrant health didn’t happen overnight, just as sickness didn’t happen overnight either. It took time for my body to become unhealthy, and it took time, patience, work, love, and devotion to myself, to be able to fully reclaim my health.
When it comes to successful, long-term healing, I’ve discovered there are no quick fixes. I made the effort, did the work, and saw positive results. And, if I can do it, you can do it too! My healing was not an unexplained miracle, and I am certainly not an anomaly. I have witnessed many clients heal their so-called “incurable” conditions, too.
I urge you not to believe the medical hype. Your body is designed by the Universe to be healthy, vibrant and strong. If you give your body the support it needs to remain in a healthy state, it will. If you or someone you know is suffering from Thyroid Disease, I encourage you to attend my upcoming seminar for an earful of alternative information the medical establishment (and the government) does not want you to know:
Optimum Thyroid Health
Thyroid disease is one of the fastest growing epidemics sweeping across the United States. There are many reasons why this gland is malfunctioning. Learn about the "endocrine disruptors" in our food and the environment that inhibit thyroid health and set the body up for failure. The thyroid is the key to maintaining a healthy metabolism and a properly functioning endocrine system. Learn how proper diet and lifestyle can protect us, and which "healthy" foods actually slow thyroid function. We will also discover the emotional and spiritual factors that contribute to this disease. This is an interactive workshop - get ready to do some work with an expert who knows first-hand how to heal the thyroid naturally!

My name is Kim. I had hypothyroidism. I starting changing my diet, taking kelp with alfafa, salmon oil, thyroid complex, probiotic supreme with BIO-tract acidophilus, GABA Plus-(gamma aminobutyric acid), multi-vitamins,hair,nail & skin vitamins, iron every three days and ester-c vitamin c. All natural vitamins. All those vitamins helped heal my thyroid, which are in organic foods. Hope this helps.
Thyroid disease is an ongoing epidemic. It is not in your genetics but your lifestyle and your environment. There are changes you can make that will improve every aspect of your health including your thyroid. Do not be fooled into thinking that medication is your only option. Take control of your own health, you are truly the only one who can do it. Do your research, make changes. Just as Andrea said, you did not get sick over night, therefore it will take time to regain your health. Persevere and take control. Through dietary and environmental and emotional changes you will heal yourself. There are plenty of professionals out there who can support you: Naturopathic Doctors, Holistic Nutritionists, and Health Coaches just to name a few!
Hi,
I respectfully disagree with your comment that thyroid problems are not genetic. Three generations of my family suffer with serious hypothyroidism & thyroid hormone resistance. My grandmother, my father, my sister & myself all suffer with thyroid issues. Through all our illness & problems we have remained physically active, run businesses & maintained healthy diets. We have also tried medication & alternative therapies to little avail with little or no improvement. I love complementary therapies but it is dangerous to say that all thyroid issues can be healed with diet, exercise & a positive outlook. Genetics can, and do, play a part. After 10 years of trying every available therapy, and almost losing my daughter mid-pregnancy due to the fact my doctors missed my hypothyroidism I am still looking for a medication or therapy that will improve my quality of life. A much more open minded view of thyroid issues & their effect on a persons day to day life is what's needed.

I was told by doctors I had a hyperthyroid I went to my county hosp and Loyola hosp. I had biopsies at both. County kept calling me to do surgery. They called me at work constantly. My test were not cancerous and I could not understand why he wanted to do surgery. I went to Loyola and they looked at the test from the county and said both of the biopsies were inconclusive. County did a biopsy and decided to give me radioactive iodine. This took place about 11yrs ago and I have been seeing my new doctor at Advocate regularly. Suddenly my doctor wanted me to see a specialist who repeated the test I had yrs ago and she dismissed me because my tumors had shrank to the size of an aspirin. I was still taking meds for hypothyroidism. I was forced to stop the meds for five months due to an insurance issue. I just went and took blood test and they are normal. I was given a refill before I got the results and now I do not know what to do with it. I have been juicing and taking iodine tablets not even on a regular basis. I am now curious about this do not stop the thyroid med thing, but do not encourage anyone to do this. I am confused.
