In The No-Grain Diet, Dr. Joseph Mercola, the director of the Optimal Wellness Center in Illinois, teaches readers how to lose weight-and keep it off-and end carb cravings once and for all.
With a revolutionary new approach, Dr. Mercola will have readers on the road to good health in just three days with an easy-to-follow plan that rids the body of grains, sweets, and starches. Readers also learn how to normalize cholesterol levels and learn Dr. Mercola's Emotional Freedom Technique, a craving-busting tool that will permanently eliminate carbohydrate cravings and addictions.
I love Dr. Mercola. I've been reading and trying to follow his advice for years now. No matter what he reports of advocates, sooner or later (usually later) you will finally see it come out the way he said, on the mainstream media. (Too bad they don't listen right away.)
Anyway, as a fan, my endorsement of this book might be suspect, but I do agree with his stance on any type grain in our diet.
The no grain diet advocates quality protein, lots of vegetables and a few fruits (mostly berries), and limited fish, because of all the mercury contamination.
And while I have no doubt this is a great diet, I can't give up all grains. For one thing, I love pizza WAY too much. But as an ideal, or for the Stepford health fanatic, this is a great plan.
If you are commited to making change in your diet, then read this book. Carbs and grains are the bane of many dieters. They are addictive in a sense as people have a hard time giving them up (myself included). Once you break out of that way of thinking, and try some of the solutions offered in this book, you'll start noticing some changes in yourself. If you ingest too many carbs, it affects your blood sugar, as this book is correct in professing. Once you get your blood sugars under control, it will be easier to "just say no" to carbs, and the cravings will eventually subside. It does take commitment, and even though I agree with that this book teaches, I am still a firm believer in eating a balanced diet of both carbs and proteins.
Let me start off by saying that I love Dr. Mercola. I have been following his advice for several years now. I read this book back at the height of the low carb phase and was very impressed. Simply put, you can and will lose weight if you follow this book religiously. You may even lose it really fast like I did. The big problem is that it is so hard to totally eliminate several food groups from your diet for LIFE. Grain free bread does not taste very good folks.
If you have amazing willpower, you'll probably do great with the no grain diet. You may even feel better. Just do not let yourself walk by a bagel shop or bakery every again. The book does have easy to follow meal plans and recipes. I personally think it is better to have grains in moderation instead of completely eliminating them but you may feel differently after reading the book.
