"WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE? HOT AGAIN, 30 YEARS AFTER DEBUT." So ran the headline this past October in the Seattle Times. Actually, it has been "hot"-the best-selling job-hunting book in the world-year after year, for more than three decades now, so much so that it is referred to as "the job-hunters' bible." Each year it is updated, and sometimes vastly rewritten, by the author, giving first-time and veteran readers alike something new to discover. For those who have not read an updated version in recent years, this is a reminder of why, in the words of Fortune magazine, "PARACHUTE remains the gold standard of career guides."
As a note, anyone who doesn't appreciate religious reference in self help should probably steer clear of this book. While not overly preachy it does go into some of the spirituality of the job hunt. That said, this book is a tremendous resource for anyone looking to change jobs, or looking for a job. I received it as a gift from my mom, since I tend to change jobs frequently, and become depressed at the job market as it is. This book is a great place to gain the confidence you need! I did however, give it 3 out of 4 stars, because I feel that it was probably a bit longer than need be, it could have been summarized much better.
This book offers many ways to strategize your job search. The author has written another book for 2009, but this one is still relevant to the current job market and financial crisis the US is in currently. The book offers resources such as websites, personality tests, and career tests to assist you in figuring out what job is best for you. This book will help you think through your current goals and improve your own marketability in the job market.
I received this book as a graduation gift, and my first thought was that this book would be great to help level out any uneven chairs I may come across. A few months later, out of boredom and a little guilt, I decided to flip through it and see what it was about; almost immediately, I found this to be much more than a book, but more of a reference guide, that was here to aid me in career decisions that I would soon have to make. What I truly enjoyed about this book is that, it does not have to be read from front to back, a reader could simply dive right into the center of this book and find a few pages very useful. It has been nearly 10 years since I received this gift and I still use it today, referring back to it, and referencing material found in it. There are not too many gifts that I have received that I actually use, let alone for more than several years, and I have not ran across many books of influence that I thought could remain relevant for very long, I consider this to be a gem, and I would say the same thing even if I did have to buy it!!
I got this book because I was curious what my employees may think about their job and why they may leave and all of that. Extremely well written and well thought out, Bolles hits it on the head when he says "people will do what they want to do" his resolve in this book is basically, while you can try to be the best boss in the world, friendly, high paying, some people will just leave. So don't worry about that, but work to get the most productive work out of them while you have them working for you. I don't worry about my employees leaving any more. I think they can sense that and they are more focused on their work and not losing or changing their job. Extremely timely with our financial crisis going on right now and all the golden parachutes we keep hearing about.
I was in the midst of a job crisis when my father handed me this book. I was in a rut, in a slump, and needed to make a change. After reading this book, I landed an excellent job with a company that has much room for advancement. Do I totally credit this book? No, but it sure made a difference. A few years later, I'm ready to job hunt again and guess which book I'm going to open up? Yup. This one.
There are plenty of diagrams and charts to fill out to help you discover what you want to do and where you want to go. It explores every nook and cranny you need to make your job search successful - from resume building to exploring what part of the country you want to live in.
I would recommend this book to anyone - whether or not you are job hunting or not. It has invaluable information.
This book is relevant to kids coming fresh out of college, to the worker who still does not know what they want to do for a living. This book is a wonderful guide to help your fragmented mind focus on what really is your calling. The first time I read the book, I did not bother with the exercises in the book, but then realized how much good information I was missing out on so went back and redid the exercises.
If you are unemployed, undecided or have no idea the type of thing you would be good at, go get this book, read it cover to cover.
If you are unemployed this book is a must. If you had a job that got shipped off to China, your need to read this. This book has great thought stimulators for any one thinking of changing careers. It is motivational and encouraging for the person who has no idea what they want to be when they grow up.
There are exercises and surveys that will get you thinking of options you may have never thought of before. There have been so many new career options added in the United States since the first publication of this book. I had a copy of the first edition that came out years ago but got a copy of the current edition and was glad I did because the additions are worth reading.
