Real Food: What to Eat and Why by Nina Planck

Hailed as the “patron saint of farmers’ markets” by the Guardian and called one of the “great food activists” by Vanity Fair’s David Kamp, Nina Planck is single-handedly changing the way we view “real food.” A vital and original contribution to the hot debate about what to eat and why, Real Food is a thoroughly researched rebuttal to dietary fads and a clarion call for the return to old-fashioned foods.

In lively, personal chapters on produce, dairy, meat, fish, chocolate, and other real foods, Nina explains how ancient foods like beef and butter have been falsely accused, while industrial foods like corn syrup and soybean oil have created a triple epidemic of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The New York Times said that Real Food “poses a convincing alternative to the prevailing dietary guidelines, even those treated as gospel,” and that “radical” as Nina’s ideas may be, the case she makes for them is “eminently sensible.”

This book (or should I say "guide") is available at a time when we all should be paying more attention to what goes into our body. Times are tough for a lot of people and they're turning to cheaper food products to cut costs. So Spam, boxed Mac and Cheese and other highly processed foods are becoming part of daily diets. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys good food but wants to keep it healthy. Nina Planck's book delves into detail about the foods we love and gives us permission to enjoy them without guilt. She has a natural writing style and "Real Food: What to Eat and Why" is fun to eat and fun to implement!

This book is amazing. I love to eat. I love to cook. I love to eat what I cook and, unfortunately, what I cook is country cooking. :) At the same time, I do try to be mindful of what I am eat and my diet. This book makes it okay to eat the real food. In fact, the author encourages us to eat the things that were made years and years ago. One of the things that surprised me the most was that she eating a whole egg, not just the whites of the eggs. Another surprise was that she suggests fresh whole milk instead of skim, pasteurized or homogenized. The point of this book is that "real food" tastes better and if the foods are eaten properly and in moderation (along with regular exercise), there's no reason to not eat what you enjoy. HIGHLY recommended!

This book was like the food Bible for me because I was searching for something similar to this, as I was eating way too much junk food, and too much out. I wanted a book that could satisy my hunger needs but nutritional needs as well. I think the best part of the book was the history of the different foods. Also, with this fast-paced world we live in, and because we never know exactly what we are eating whether it's out or at home, the category of "real food" has seemed to vanish. This book takes it back to the basics with "fresh" information on real food; this was a change of pace from the processed foods we are used to.

I absoulutely love this book. I am an eater. I love to eat, and love to cook; I am also very concerned about what I put into my body, and worry a lot about my diet. This book allows you to make it okay to eat real food. She encourages us to eat food the way people ate decades ago. She encourages the whole egg, not just the egg white. She suggests whike milk over skim. Fresh, instead of pasteurized or homogenized. Farmer's markets are a heaven on earth. Butter is better than margarine. I devoured this book, and you know what? I agree completely. Not only do REAL foods taste better, their health benefits outweigh the risks if eaten properly and moderately, with regular exercise. There is no reason to deprive yourself of real food. I applaud this book whole-heartedly.

This is a really great book. People forget, in our world of low fat, no fat, that real foods are important to a balanced diet. Anyone who is a true healthy eater will tell you the importance of real food (with moderation of course!). Since eating more real food and less junk food, I've lost 5lbs! This book is great.

I consider myself to be a pretty health conscious person but I was never very clear on what exactly I should be eating or feeding my family. I didn't know exactly what "whole foods" meant, but this book helped to clear that up for me. Nina Planck tells us how we can get back to eating the basic foods that are healthy and whole. She suggests things like natural, real butter without all of the chemicals or additives found in margarine. In addition, natural cheese and grass fed beef are some of Planck's suggestions. She has a theory that all of the chemicals and altered, processed foods are responsible for obesity and many other health epidemics plaguing us today. I tend to agree with her and feel eating natural, organic, whole foods is the way to go. I feel better feeding my family these types of food and am really glad I found this book.

Hi friends, health is wealth is an age old saying but often forgotten one. I am really great full to Nina Planck who has written this most useful book "Real Food: What to Eat and Why". I read this book with great enthusiasm because the author has dealt about the nature of food which is to be taken in our daily life. She explains clearly what is a real food for us, what is to be eaten and why.The first impression about this book starts from the cover page itself when you can see a very attractive picture of fresh fruits and vegetables.I liked her emphasis for traditional foods like real butter and real cheeses. Also the book warns us about the health hazards of food containing chemicals and pesticides. Overall it is a very informative work and should be read by every one including every housewife who are directly involved in food management and preparations. It is a best guide for future generation since the traditional food system is slowly disappearing which is very alarming.

I think this book should be a must read for... everyone! This book will really make you stop and think about what foods you choose you put into your body. The basic idea of the book is that real, natural foods are best for us- and, yes, she backs up her claims with historical and nutritional facts. Real foods (even ones we have been brainwashed to believe are bad for us like real butter, real cheeses, and traditionally grass-fed beef) are what we should be eating because that is the way nature intended. The chemicals and pesticides are foods are now grown and produced to include are what is making us unhealthy and overweight. I know it sounds cheesy, but this book has really changed my family's life and the way we choose what food we eat. I love knowing I am feeding my family healthy foods that are not filled with chemicals- read this book!

Are you sick of fad diet after fad diet? Do you want to learn how to nourish your body with food that is actually FOOD and not processed junk? If so, this is the book for you. (cue infomercial music ha-ha)

Nina Planck describes how and why eating real foods like meat, cheese, butter (remember that?), vegetables and more is healthy for you. All of the information is easy to understand. Plank cites all the research for her claims and it's simple and straightforward. I don't know about you but I get bored with nutritional books that read like scientific studies.

After reading this you'll never look at food the same again. You'll also probably go and clear out your pantry.
