A full-spectrum nutritional cookbook with a startling message--animal fats and cholesterol are vital factors in the human diet, necessary for reproduction and normal growth, proper function of the brain and nervous system, protection from disease and optimum energy levels. Includes information on how to prepare grains, health benefits of bone broths and enzyme-rich lacto-fermented foods.
I became interested in this book when I was milking cows at my small farm. Although I was milking as many as three cows, I could not get enough milk to sell to everyone who wanted to buy it from me. I kept hearing about this book, so I decided to check it out.
I really enjoyed all the information included in this book. The first 150 pages or so were especially interesting to me, and I learned a lot from them. It would certainly make more sense to eat the way this book suggests, as it is closer to nature. However, in trying to find recipes I could use, the ingredients were things not easily found, and I was not committed to such complicated cooking, although I certainly knew many people who were.
I would recommend buying this book only to people who truly wanted to spend time making changes in their diet in a more detailed and complicated way. I might recommend borrowing the book first, either from a friend or the library, to see if it’s worth the investment for your family.
I learned so much from Nourishing Traditions. This is a HUGE book just stuffed with information and recipes about eating real and nourishing foods. It has sections on meats, dairy, fermented foods, and more. Each section thoroughly explains why it is important to eat each particular food and it provides recipes to cook. It is billed as a cookbook, but you should know that it contains more information than just recipes. Just don't drop it on your foot. It really is a heavy paperback.
I have experienced some health benefits after following the advice in Nourishing Traditions. I am sleeping better, I have more energy and I have even lost a few pounds. Some of the information in here might be a little alarming at first if you do not have an open mind. That is because right now our society tends to be brainwashed that we all need to be eating a low fat diet filled with chemical garbage. Speaking of BRAINwashed, there is a section in here about the health benefits of eating brains. That prompted a few giggles from my husband. For the record, you could not pay me to eat brains.
All kidding aside, this is the book for you if you are willing to learn about eating healthier and protecting your body from illness. You will never again feel guilty about eating a steak with your vegetables.
I would recommend at least reading this book, it has a lot of interesting information on the food industry. There are tons of different recipes to try which all use a traditional way of cooking. For example there are a lot of recipes which you will ferment yourself using lacto bacteria like in yogurt. This disgusts and intrigues me at the same time. I tried making sauerkraut and yogurt this way out of pure curiosity and it was really good! There are lots of other "normal" recipes in there too, along with some bizarre ones with raw meat that i would never try. But if you want some really interesting and different ways of cooking and preparing healthy foods, I definitely recommend checking out this book. If nothing else, you will learn how people prepared foods prior to the time of refrigeration, and you will learn about the health benefits of fermentation, as well as learning about the dangers of chemicals in our food supply.
