My Boys Can Swim!: The Official Guy's Guide to Pregnancy by Ian Davis

For most men, the only interesting part of pregnancy is what happens before the egg is fertilized. With that in mind, Ian Davis wrote My Boys Can Swim, a wry, witty, endlessly entertaining book that addresses the concerns of every dad-to-be. In addition to pregnancy basics, inside are unique guy insights you'll never find in those other pregnancy book, such as "Lamaze is just some fancy French word that doesn't mean much of anything. If the class was called 'Coping with the Excruciating Pains of Childbirth,' who would go?"

I read this book about 4 years ago and then bought a copy for my cousin's husband during her pregnancy. All the men in our family would get together and read parts of it during get togethers on the weekend and to them it was the funniest thing in the world. I admit some parts may seem to play down on women but isn't it about men get a pregnancy book of their own? We can't really expect them to feel about pregnancy as a woman does but this book helps to inform in the way men learn best...humor. It is educational without all the fancy words and details and my cousin's husband although humored by it all, enjoyed the book and it caused him to read other pregnancy books as well. I know plenty of fathers who have a copy and I recommend this to all new fathers.

When I was pregnant with our first and only child I thought it would be "cute" and "funny" to give this as a gift to my husband as the soon to be daddy. He didn't get it. Unlike the prior reviewer,he did NOT think it was funny at all. I don't even know if he read the whole thing, and it's a very short book. I read it and thought some of it was funny. I didn't think any of the advice they gave was useful and I kind of thought it was a bit derogatory toward pregnant women, but I was trying to give the author the benefit of the doubt and to show support to my hubby that I knew he was going through "stuff" too while I was pregnant. Apparently I shouldn't have because my husband was turned off immediately by the title and then the book itself. Not a winner in our camp.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I bought a few pregnancy books for my husband to read and this was his favorite. If you don't want to be the one to tell your husband that you will turn into a hormonal and gassy mess, get him this book. The author is blunt and funny and talks in "guy speak" instead of using medical terminology for everything.

The only downside is that the book is short and it does not cover every topic. My husband has loaned out his copy to a couple guys at the office have pregnant wives and they all thought it was funny too. If you are looking for a serious book, look elsewhere. Some of the content could be misconstrued as rude if you have a dry sense of humor.

You can easily find this book used for cheap if you hunt around so you don't have to pay retail price.
