A new updated edition...to help writers beat the competition.
Written by a New York literary agent and a West Coast acquiring editor, this book offers inside advice, author case studies, and even sample proposals, contracts, press releases, co-author agreements and more. This third edition features new content on non-fiction success, hot topics in fiction and non-fiction, how world events affect publishing, and more.
- The most complete handbook on the market in this area
- Expanded information relevant to the changing tide of the industry
- Includes sample proposals, press releases, agreements, etc.
- Authors know the book publishing world as editor, agent, and as authors
This book is an absolute must for beginning writers. Even if you are not to the point of searching for a publisher, I would recommend this book. The step by step directions for finding a market, courting an agent and approaching publishers will set you on the path to finding your niche.
The information from published authors is the first step, learn from their mistakes. You will get an idea of what sells, and what does not, so you can tweak your project if necessary. Then, pay close attention to the information on editing and finding an editor, because that may be the most important step you take in getting published.
When you approach literary agents and publishers, you want to be as professional and polished as possible, this book will help you get there, and instruct you in the tricks to making sure your work does not end up in "the slush pile"!
I found the information on finding the right publisher to approach saved me a lot of paper, stamps, time and rejections. It helped me narrow down my target publishers to those that actually might have some interest in my project. I still had a lot of rejections, but a high number of personal responses with comments on how to improve my work. That was a big help, and I'm sure it was because I used the principles presented to find people who really were interested in what I was writing.
If you are on the road to being published, this book is a great companion!
This is an amazing resource for anyone looking to be published. While nothing can guarantee that you WILL be published, this book gives you all the information you need to assure you can try! I have lots of information I didn't have before. I don't even need any other book!
A friend of mine gave me this book when she found out that I was working on my writing career from home.
This book is an excellent Resource for writer's who have knowledge of the field and want to get published. But, for someone who wants
to write and has little knowledge in the beginning; this book could be confusing and overwhelming.
The book contains many different aspects: tips, suggestions on where to look for publication, and resources on additional information. But, all in all, I can only give 3 stars because there are other books out there that have the content in a more uniform presentation.
This book as it neatly describes is in the right place for beginners and aspiring writers. Its a whole lot of collected information about all writing sorts ,ie a common representaion of a - huge field of writng . It therefore depends on the reader, to research upon his interest , after going through its contents .Fairly enough it has a collective information about article writing ,reviewing and probably story writing and novel spinning strategies , hence it is clear that it is no exception to all that "how to 's " available in the market .as it says clearly starters - ahoy here it comes to guide you around the language of basic writing skills!!!
As a wannabe-writer of sorts, I find myself collecting countless copies of how-to books on publishing, craft, writing prompts, and Writer's Markets (I found my dusty copy of WM from 2002 the other day! talk about dated), I'm trying to work on my discrimination when it comes to buying these types of books; after all, I think I spend more time trying to find literary magazines than I do actually writing. But one book that I find myself going back to quite often for a reference tool is the Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published.
I appreciate this book mostly for its ability to take a dry-as-toast tutorial on getting your material published and makes it interesting and easy to understand. Along with a current copy of the Writer's Market, this is a great tool for writers everywhere who have finished their first (or second or fiftieth) draft and are ready to take it to the next step.
I bought this book a few years ago along with the Writer's Market. It is a fairly basic guide to submitting manuscripts, children's stories, novels, newspaper articles, etc. It is fairly comprehensive, so it doesn't give a lot of great detail in any one particular field. Rather, it is a broad perspective of the whole field of publishing and writing. It is a bit difficult to follow, and there is a lot of information in it you won't need. It is a good place to start, though, if you are looking to break into the vast sea of writers out there, and gives decent tips for getting your manuscript or article noticed.
