Heartburn and acid reflux have a nasty way of defying cure or prevention, but following the Great Physician's prescription for heartburn and acid reflux can alleviate symptoms and nip more serious problems in the bud. Acid indigestion and burning feelings in the chest often strike in the middle of the night with stabbing chest pain. At 1:30 in the morning, there are not a whole lot of options. Most approach the medicine cabinet with the fervent hope that there are a few Tums left in the bottle.
I bought this book in hopes of finding more insight into the terrible acid reflux problem my husband suffers from. I had purchased two other books in the "Great Physician's RX" series and was pleased with those titles. However, I was not impressed with this book. Believe it or not, the recommendations are based largely on spiritual and emotional well-being. Although I do believe that a positive spirituality and outlook can have an effect on any physical ailment, I believe the book could have had a bit more information based on medical facts! There was absolutely no information on H2 blockers or other new promising medications. The book does offer some new possible remedies, but the ideas are mainly just rehashed remedies that everyone who suffers from acid reflux has heard before. I really feel like I wasted my money on this book because my husband is taking more heartburn medication than ever!
I'll just say it right away: I really didn't like this book. While the book is informative on some things, such as suggested lifestyle changes for supposedly "curing" heartburn and acid reflux, I had the impression while reading this book that the author likely didn't have personal experience with dealing with these health issues. I also didn't know when first being lent this book that it has an extreme religious bias.
While the book does give some interesting suggestions at food choices, dieting, and exercising, they don't particularly seem entirely helpful or effective in assisting with acid reflux. The book seems to take a strict approach from the standpoint at solving acid reflux by natural means - which could be dangerous, as there are individuals who have it severe to the point where not only medications, but surgery is necessary (I was one of those).
There are even chapters in the book for how to even help "cure" acid reflux from an emotional, and spiritual standpoint - more specifically, a Christian standpoint. This is just my opinion, but I tend to believe that religion and spiritual things don't really have any place in medical or scientific books. I suppose it can be argued, however, since the author doesn't really talk about medications available to help with these diseases, that the book really isn't that scientific to begin with. An example I can give is that throughout the book, the author will try to justify why one thing should be done in treatment of acid reflux - and instead of backing it up with scientific evidence, "proved" it by quoting a Bible verse.
I would say this book would probably be helpful to those of a very strict Christian faith, as the evidence given for treatments is almost purely Biblical and not scientific. However, if you were looking to actually be helped in your problems with acid reflux, I definitely would recommend to look elsewhere.
