I always enjoyed running in high school and that love didn't leave as I graduated and went on to college and then into my marriage. My husband is an avid runner, as well and we loved going running together when we were first married. It then seemed that, with working more hours, increased home responsibilities and eventually becoming a parent, there was no time for running. I really needed some encouragement to get "bak in the habit" and this was a great book for that! What I also liked about this book is that it wasn't just geared towards experienced runners, but it would be great for beginners, as well, to teach them how to and how not to train. This book kind of covers it all; from history to nutritional tips for runners that are older. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in running!!

I used to be a runner but got away from it over the years when I lived in areas that were not conducive to running (or because I was just too lazy). However, last year, due a chance of location and job responsibilities, I realized that I had time to get back to a running routine. In the past, I had a small library of running books (including one of the "bibles" of running by the late Jim Fixx) but I wanted something more up-to-date. I decided to by Jeff Galloway's Book on Running, and I'm certainly glad I did. This book is extremely useful for beginners as well as those who are getting back into the sport after several years of taking it easy. This book provides lots of good information on training, shoes, warm-ups and even a chapter on women's running. If you can only buy one book for your running library, let Jeff Galloway's book take that place of honor. You won't be sorry.

I was a runner in high school and my younger 20’s. Even after high school I continued to run an average of 3 miles per day. Alas, I begin working more hours, got married and simply felt I had no time for running. I needed something to encourage me and this book did the trick!! The book is also perfect for those who are running beginners and would like an introduction on how and how not to train. It is a very well-rounded book and includes everything from historical anecdotes to nutrition to tips for older runners.

I had attempted a running “come-back” many times but tried so hard and ran too fast to the point that I would become exhausted and discouraged. Galloway's book is written for people who want to take the long and slow road, built on slow and long runs, to greater speed and eventually longer runs. I have been implementing what I have read and have started over…this time taking my time and it is working out well. I highly recommend this book, it has been a big help to me!

This book by Jeff Galloway is definitely a classic. I have the older edition, but the advice for getting started running will never be out of date. Start slowly, give yourself plenty of time, and Jeff will even guide you through completing a marathon. Racing is not the goal of every runner, but the best part of the book is the schedules that help you train for any distance race, demonstrating that Galloway is not only an athlete, but a coach and teacher of the sport of running. Add in the advice on shoes, the focus on nutrition and the importance of balancing rest with training to avoid injury, and you will reach for this book again and again. I was able to use this book as a foundation for training for and successfully completing two full and two half marathons. I highly recommend it.

I love Jeff Galloway’s books. While the design may be a little outdated, the content inside is invaluable for those who are starting running as either a way to lose weight, become more fit, or even for those who want to move toward a bigger goal- like running a 5k, or a marathon.

This is the book I used when I first started training for a marathon, and while the distance at first seemed daunting, I could not have asked for a better guide. As a new runner, I was concerned that I would not be able to tell the difference between expected tenderness/soreness and a potential injury. However runner’s injuries are well covered and I felt reassured knowing what was ‘normal’ versus what might be an actual problem. Galloway also covers basic nutrition, which is great for those of us who want to fuel our bodies appropriately for the new work out level. The most important offering though, for me personally, were the training schedules. There was enough variety to keep me interested and motivated- I really felt I was getting somewhere. You will too with this book.

This is the book every beginning runner should read. It will help you understand how to start out slow and continue to grown and strengthen your run. It has understandable explanations for how to begin without hurting yourself. Jeff gives you ideas for making your runs more enjoyable. He shows you how to test yourself. I would not have be able to be where I am at my running pace if I had not read this book.

"Galloway's Book on Running" by Jeff Galloway has become a running classic, providing the basics about running, training, and racing for years. Galloway does not presume the runner is a casual "New Year's Resolution" jogger who will likely quit in a month. Instead, he looks to build a foundation of sensible workouts, leading to genuine fitness, endurance and speed.
He gives instruction of every detail important to new and intermediate runners, from stretching to hydration, from injury management to weight loss, from running for kids to running after age 40.Galloway writes as an experienced runner and coach. He provides training programs for most levels of fitness and experience. This book is perfect for those who have just discovered running and would like a primer on how and how not to train. It's main strength is its well-rounded nature, containing everything from historical anecdotes to nutrition and tips for older runners. The information on injury is extremely useful; Galloway even tells you when to give up on self-treatment and seek a doctor. This is the one book you absolutely need to train and compete.
