As a rule, I love just about every book Jeff Galloway puts out about running. But to every rule there is an exception, and perhaps this is the exception to that rule. It isn't that it's a bad book- it isn't poorly written, it doesn't give bad information. Rather, it's that the sort of comprehensive overview that readers of his other offerings will have come to expect is not on display here. The book is exactly what it says- for those interested in running 5k and 10k races. Unfortunately, what the book doesn't mention is that it is really for *beginners* running those sorts of events. Perhaps Galloway assumes that since most will start out with a 5k, his advice should be tailored to those just beginning to train. It makes sense, but there are plenty of people who run 5ks in addition to longer races, or just because they enjoy the event, and this book doesn't particularly offer anything new to them.
Still the advice is solid, so it's not a total loss. I'd highly recommend anyone looking to buy a Galloway running book instead invest in the 'Book on Running', or even one of his books on running marathons, which will cover the same topics, but with more information and useful advice provided for runners at all fitness and skill levels.
