A groundbreaking guide to psychological health based on the revolutionary therapeutic approach called Psychology of Mind. Simple, short-term, and accessible to all, the principles of Psychology of Mind offer a common-sense method for letting go of depression and tapping into a natural state of well-being--without drugs or psychotherapy.
I wish that I was one of the many people that this book successfully helped to rid of their depression. For myself, my depression is, and always has been, a neurological and hereditary chemical imbalance. While the author seemed to have a pretty good grasp on depression and why people (normal people) get depressed, I didn't feel like it acknowledged so much depression from a chemical imbalance standpoint, to the extent where medication really IS required to get better or see improvement of symptoms. I did find the book to be more than slightly repetitive with the questioning, almost as if I was going back and forth through email correspondence with a therapist rather than being able to speak with them face to face. Some of the material also did feel a bit too far carried-out and droned on longer than it needed to. However, the questions and ideas posed within the book aren't earth-shattering and new, and could really apply to anyone who picks up the book for a read - even if they don't have depression.
I believe there are definitely chemical imbalances that can cause major depression. What I don't believe is that we choke on pills before we try to fix the problem with common sense and thats what this book does. Makes you look at "Why am I depressed"? Thats almost an unanswerable question, so it breaks it down into emotions. "Do you feel anger when ___ happens?" Why is that? Why do you feel that way? What happened to you in the past that makes you feel that way? How can you forgive, forget, move on? All those questions are answered in this book. I love it so because I am not a big medicine taker, never want to be, and I think it doesn't address the real problem anyway. With some time, and this book, you can if your depression isn't too severe.
I hate to sound like a cliche, but this book changed my life. I was at a very low point with a lot of difficult situations and problems, and I was at a loss for how to get back on track. This book has no-nonsense, honest advice for people who hate to get up in the morning or are full of sadness.
I found the book interesting and easy to read, with specific ideas about how to improve my outlook and thereby my situations. I really felt that the author had a good understanding of people who suffer from "a touch of the blues" to serious depression, and why.
By following the advice in the book, I was able to turn my life around and be a better mother, partner and friend...most of all, I truly did feel better. I have recommended this book to friends and family...even people who don't suffer from depression can benefit from this book. I highly recommend it.
