My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey by Jill Bolte Taylor

Jill Bolte Taylor was a 37-year-old Harvard-trained and published brain scientist when a blood vessel exploded in her brain. Through the eyes of a curious neuroanatomist, she watched her mind completely deteriorate whereby she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Because of her understanding of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and an amazing mother, Jill completely recovered her mind, brain and body. In My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey, Jill shares with us her recommendations for recovery and the insight she gained into the unique functions of the right and left halves of her brain. Having lost the categorizing, organizing, describing, judging and critically analyzing skills of her left brain, along with its language centers and thus ego center, Jill’s consciousness shifted away from normal reality. In the absence of her left brain’s neural circuitry, her consciousness shifted into present moment thinking whereby she experienced herself “at one with the universe.”

When my grandfather had his first stroke, I bought MY STROKE OF INSIGHT to read, in hopes of being able to console myself in some way over this new man. I found this book to be a brilliant aid in the weeks following his stroke, and a wonderful book that helped me learn to love myself, as corny as that sounds.

The medical aspects of the book seem like they’re spot on. Taylor is a brain scientist, as she calls herself in the title, so I have no doubt that her descriptions of what’s going on in the brain when you have a stroke are true.

The truly wonderful parts, however, where the ones that fall into the self-improvement category. In these, she talks about how her inner voice, that one that tells you that you’re a bad person and the like, just wasn’t there anymore. It seems like a wonderful thing, to not have that voice muttering about everything that you’re doing.

As she healed, she began looking to other things, such as the energy dynamic s of Feng Shui, to help quiet that inner voice. She shares these techniques and her inspiration that arose from following them with the reader, and let me tell you, they really do work. MY STROKE OF INSIGHT is an amazing book. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone having troubles of any sort, because its inspirational message is so open and helpful.

The book, 'My Stroke of Insight' by Jill Bolte Taylor is a remarkable read. This book is not about strokes in general, but rather about this scientist’s experience. She writes very clearly and paints a wonderful picture of what was going on in her head during the stroke and recovery. Not only was she inspired by her own journey, but she shares the inspiration directly with the reader. First, it becomes a catalogue of thank-you’s to her mother, who aided her recovery. Second, it is an under-edited exhortation to train our minds to choose right-hemisphere thinking, which is more loving and accepting and less judgmental. This book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the human brain and how it functions, any health care professional or caregiver who deals with stroke patients, anyone who has a friend or family member who has had a stroke, and anyone who is concerned about the possibility that they might someday suffer from a stroke. Dr. Taylor provides a clear and detailed description of what can happen when a stroke occurs. Amazing detail about the differing functions of the left and right sides of our brain and what it might be like to temporarily lose the output from the left. The message is how much more we can learn, and don't ever give up on someone in that position.
