The cover of this book says, "Changes are Ahead" and it's absolutely right. SOme of us are nervous, or even scared, of the thought of our children becoming adolescents but, rest easy, Dr. James Dobson has answered all of your questions in this book! The book has a great way of approaching what can be difficult subjects such as physical changes, sexuality, and the mental and emotional changes our children go through. It would also be very helpful to share this book with your child. I know that it's helped us be able to communicate better with our child and we now have a knowledge we never had before. It's great!

The cover is correct: “changes are ahead.” How do you get started on the road to parenting an adolescent? Dr. Dobson has the answers for you in this book. I felt this book approaches subjects in a very gently way. From sexuality, physical changes, emotional & mention changes…the “scary” subjects are covered in a gentle way.

This is actually a great book to share with your child. It has helped us as parents relate to and understand our child in a new way. It has also armed us with knowledge for future issues. I highly recommend it!!

This book is unusual in that it is good for parents to read, but it is also a great book to give to your child. If you can get them going on it, they will find topics that are right up their alley. The subject matter really gets you involved. It opens the doors of communication on all subjects - some that might be hard for parents to get going - but there it is in chapter 2... so it's easy to bring it up. This is great to give to kids before they are in the thick of all the changes because it breaks down what the upcoming stages of adolescence will look like and helps you feel "normal" in the process. It has been a very positive aspect of communication in our home.

Preparing for adolescence is basically a good book. But at what child's age should you read it? kids are growing up and being adolescents so much sooner than even 10 years ago. all of the information in the book is self explanatory but, in my view, you should have been setting the ground rules way before adolescence. For instance, speaking with children about their feelings and emotions should have started when they were two or three...self esteem issues should have been started at birth and REALLY gotten a huge dose before and after 8 because they will need it. being ridiculed and made fun of is a fact of life for kids no matter where they are in school. How to deal with it and what they should think and say back is the real issue here. Overall, the book is an ok book but it does leave out quite a bit concerning the real issues that adolescence kids have on a daily basis.

I bought the book and the audio tapes. It was a fabulous series for the preteen age child. I used it with my Jr. High age Sunday school class. The children were very interested in the topics. Dobson did a great job on the audio tapes. I was afraid they were too low-tech to hold the groups attention, but I was wrong. They seemed to enjoy his humor and they way he developed the stories about teens in difficult situations. The question and discussion periods often went overtime because the youn people didn't want to stop talking about things. It did get into lots of emotional discussions of difficult situations the preteen can get into. I think they were relieved to know that they were not the only ones feeling the way they did. The book and tapes were an easy introduction to topics of curiosity for this age group.

So you thought the terrible twos were awful? Just wait until your child approaches adolescence and you seem to always be in a struggle with your child. When I saw Preparing for Adolescence in the local bookstore. there was nohesitation to buy it. My daughters and I didn't find the ten minute sessions beneficial, you have to add just a little more creativity than what is suggested in the book, however the discussion starters were great! It has helped to open up communication between us that is so enjoyable. So many times I have desired to relate to my daughters but until reading this book, I lacked in the area of how to approach them with conversation and even understanding their dreams and goals. Preparing for Adolescence is a fun-filled book I recommend highly to parents who have adolescents in the family.
