Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food by Jessica Seinfeld

It has become common knowledge that childhood obesity rates are increasing every year. But the rates continue to rise. And between busy work schedules and the inconvenient truth that kids simply refuse to eat vegetables and other healthy foods, how can average parents ensure their kids are getting the proper nutrition and avoiding bad eating habits?

As a mother of three, Jessica Seinfeld can speak for all parents who struggle to feed their kids right and deal nightly with dinnertime fiascos. As she wages a personal war against sugars, packaged foods, and other nutritional saboteurs, she offers appetizing alternatives for parents who find themselves succumbing to the fastest and easiest (and least healthy) choices available to them. Her modus operandi? Her book is filled with traditional recipes that kids love, except they're stealthily packed with veggies hidden in them so kids don't even know! With the help of a nutritionist and a professional chef, Seinfeld has developed a month's worth of meals for kids of all ages that includes, for example, pureed cauliflower in mac and cheese, and kale in spaghetti and meatballs. She also provides revealing and humorous personal anecdotes, tear–out shopping guides to help parents zoom through the supermarket, and tips on how to deal with the kid that "must have" the latest sugar bomb cereal.

But this book also contains much more than recipes and tips. By solving problems on a practical level for parents, Seinfeld addresses the big picture issues that surround childhood obesity and its long–term (and ruinous) effects on the body. With the help of a prominent nutritionist, her book provides parents with an arsenal ofinformation related to kids' nutrition so parents understand why it's important to throw in a little avocado puree into their quesadillas. She discusses the critical importance of portion size, and the specific elements kids simply must have (as opposed to adults) in order to flourish now and in the future: protein, calcium, vitamins, and Omega 3 and 6 fats.

Jessica Seinfeld's book is practical, easy–to–read, and a godsend for any parent that wants their kids to be healthy for a long time to come.

This book was given to me as a gift. I have 2 young daughters who are both very picky eaters. This cookbook has changed everything. The author teaches you how to sneak healthy purees into your children's meals. They won't even realize that you added cauliflower to their eggs or carrots to their brownies. What a great idea and what a lifesaver!

Often when I am at a restaurant or visiting friends who have children, I observe that when it comes time to serving them a healthy meal, it's like declaring a health food war. I picked up Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food primarily out of curiousity due to the title and found it to be a very sneaky but probably sucessful tool in getting your child to eat healthy foods. It teaches the parent the art of disguising food. I am sure it is helpful however how will the child ever learn to appreciate a certain food if they never know they have tried it? It is something that could backfire and I can't help to see that happening. If I went and told my daughter, I know you like carrots because you eat them all the time, I am doing good because she is eating them but heck she can't identify with eating them at all so I am the one losing. My goal is to have the child truly love the food. I must admit the chocolate chip cookie recipe is a unique one.

It had been a few years ago when I saw Deceptively Delicious featured on a talk show. The author was there with all these desserts and foods that looked delicious and they had a groups of kids tasting the food. I was intrigued she was getting them to eat zucchinis’ and other vegetables and they were asking for more. When my kids started refusing to eat any vegetables I quickly went to find the book at my local library for help. I have to note I did have to hide the book as my 2 oldest can read and if they new their were veggies in them they would not have eaten the food, no matter how yummy it looked. Of all the recipes, my son favors the desserts. To be honest, I don’t mind allowing him to have it because they are packed with veggies compared to what he eats at school. Although all the recipes don’t work for my family, my kids had a traumatic experience with an Ethiopian dish that looks like spaghetti sauce and since then they refuse to eat any red sauces, it took my oldest 4 years to eat pizza again and 2 years to eat any red fruits. But all in all it is loaded with wonderful recipes, that I am able to feed to my kids that are healthy and nutritious. I highly recommend it for parents of picky eaters, they might not be completely transformed, mine weren’t but they will eat a lot more then they did before.

This book offers tricky ways to get your child to eat different foods. Many of the ideas are sneaky, such as using fruit or vegetable purees rather than whole fruits and vegetables. This book is even helpful to adults who may not like vegetables, but are open to ways to integrate them into their diet. Helpful and fun, with many tips and tricks from taste-testers.

My kids never knew there were carrots in their cupcakes. I love this cookbook. So many delicious recipes, I am going to try to make them all for my kids. I just picked this book up recently and I am very impressed by the variety of recipes. My daughter who is the pickiest eater has not complained once yet about the meals I have made her from this book. The cookies are fabulous, the cupcakes my kids devoured. The mac and cheese was as usual a huge hit with both of them. My dilemma was, I had one kid who would eat anything and one kid who wouldn't eat anything. Now I have two kids who both sit down to eat there meals and don't even realize all the healthy goodness that's been disguised in there food and if they do - they don't care because they are loving every bite. Awesome!

My wife bought this for the both of us to read when my daughter was a little younger. She wasn't over weight but I knew it was never too early to eat good food. I think the problems lie (and the book says this) when children eat so much sugar in their diet, that nothing tastes good to them any more except ultra sugary foods. So my aim with my daughter was to just work extra hard to erase that from her palette and start fresh. Using naturally sugary fruits and veggies, my wife and I made a great health snack platter, granola, and many things that are as filling as they are healthy. My daughter to this day has not health problems and I blame this book for that. Bravo :)

Yes, I know I was a little skeptical about this book when I first heard about it, Jery Seinfeld's wife writing a cookbook, how farfetched, but decided to give it a read, because the concept intrigued me.

Jessica Seinfeld really has some great ideas, that really work to have your kids eat more healthy. These recipes are very simple, but I have never thought about incorporating vegetables this way. Since reading this book, one of the ones I always do now is putting carrots in spaghetti sauce, my son claims he hates carrots and has no idea he is eating carrots in this recipe. I just sit there and smile. This book is definitely worth checking out, it will make a true difference in the amount of daily vegetables you can incorporate into your kid's diets.

I first got this book when I was participating in a childhood obesity coalition in San Diego, CA. I worked for the San Diego Hunger Coalition and was interested in recipes that could be adapted to the types of foods offered in the emergency food pantries in my county. Many low-income children are also overweight because of the poor quality of foods they get on a regular basis. There are many reasons for this and the book does offer some advice on getting good nutrition that is affordable into meals that children will eat.

Many of the participants in the coalition on childhood obesity came from organizations working with children and the feedback from those who read this book was positive. I know from working with families on welfare that young mothers could use some of the ideas given in this book. Helpful ideas on how to develop healthy eating habits along with recipes make this book worth buying. I think that there are some things that some children will never want to eat till they get older, but most of what is in this book is useful.

Same as the Sneaky Chef

This book is essentially the same as The Sneaky Chef. For convenience I'll repost that review here.

While substituting unhealthy ingredients for healthy ones in a recipe is a good idea, this is really not the way to get your family eating better.

First of all, veggies that have been cooked, pureed and then cooked again in a baked item have lost most of their nutritional value. The amounts called for in these recipes are so small to begin with as to make the whole time consuming process pointless.

Secondly, the key to helping children make good food choices is teaching them to always try a little bit of everything. Over time, they learn that trying new foods is fun and develop a wider palate. How will they learn to like healthy food if it is always "snuck" into meals and is unrecognizable? The whole idea of some foods needing to be disguised just reinforces the idea that those foods can't possibly be tasty.

Steer clear of this gimmick. Show your kids by example that eating a variety of healthy food is enjoyable.

I have the world's pickiest eaters. My kids will like a food one day and then hate it the next. They cleverly hide their vegetables under their napkins so they don't have to eat them. I found this book browsing at the bookstore. I was impressed by how sturdy it was made. It's a thick cardboard like cover. It holds up good to wear and tear. The basis of the book is that you get your children to eat veggies by pureeing them and hiding them in kid friendly food. I know it sounds a little gross, but it works. I even got the kids and my husband to eat the spinach brownies. My favorite recipe is the mac n cheese. I have put pureed carrots and squash in that dish. The kids have no idea. I'm a happier mom now because I know they are getting their vegetables. I found it helps to have a high powered blender to make the purees. The blender worked much better than my food processor. I am giving copies of this book to all of my girlfriends. I love it!

I'm always a little skeptical when it comes to books written or endorsed by celebrities. I mean, honestly, I work at a book store and whenever I have to put out 100 copies of the latest celebrity tell-all bestseller, I scoff, because it's what we do. But I decided to give this one the benefit of the doubt, because it's a cookbook meant to make "healthy foods" taste good. I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff. Tasty diet food? Impossible!

After being tempted by mainly the side-dish and dessert recipes, I decided to buy the book and give it a try. I found that the recipes were very user-friendly in that they didn’t add, essentially, a novel’s length to my grocery shopping list, which I appreciated. All the recipes I’ve tried are tasty, but I can’t really imagine trying to “trick” a kid with the same foods, not by today’s standards of fast food. All in all, I think it’s a good cookbook to add to my health-conscious collection.

Finally, a book written not just by a celebrity wife, but a wife and mom who makes you feel like your a friend who stopped by for a cup of coffee. Jessica offers so many delicious ideas and recipes that I never thought of. She gives a variety of combinations that get those important veggies into my little girls stomach.

I have a picky eater and what may work one day will not on another. Holding her weight is a major concern for my daughter.... but thanks to this wonderful book, we are so much more on our way to healthy meals without the fuss or tantrums.

Jessica also shares daily humor and antecedents that help lighten my heart and give a smile.

I highly recommend this book to everyone!!!

This book is for children but with the diet I’m on, some of the tips and the recipes are very helpful. It's awesome. People can puree spinach and other veggies into smoothies. You can’t taste it with fruit and honey or yogurt and honey in the smoothie. There is a spaghetti sauce with carrots and other veggies pureed that is so good; you can’t tell it’s not really "tomato" sauce. There are lots of fruits pureed in baked foods, vegetable purees in meatloaf, mini-meatballs, sauces and other dishes. Some adults refuse to eat vegetables and it's just as easy to sneak veggies in for adults. They never notice. This works for fruit as well, the sweetness and color cover up for other hidden veggies. This and the book Sneaky Chef by Missy Chase Lapine have lots of good recipes. There was something in the news awhile back about one accusing the other of copying and it went to court but I never heard who won, if anyone. I would recommend this to any parent, adult caretaker or anyone else who is trying to get more nutrition in their diet.

Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food

What a fantastic book with a fantastic concept! The only regret I have is that this book was not available when I was raising my own fussy eaters. My grandchildren are extremely hard to get to eat anything, much less food that is good for them, so I bought this book for my daughter.

The idea of adding a nutritional puree to recipes is ingenious. Deceptively Delicious is not only filled with good recipes, but is also easy to read and filled with great tips for busy households. Jessica Seinfeld is herself a busy mom to three children so she certainly understands not only the need for well-balanced meals, but also the time constraints that today’s families face.

Jessica collaborated with nutritionist Joy Bauer to assure that the meals not only taste good but also are healthy and well balanced. The recipes cover all areas from main courses to deserts, along with tips on making the purees in advance for easier meal preparation.

I highly recommend this book not only for families with hard to feed children, but for all familes.

I bought this book for my sister for Christmas. She has finicky kids who don't eat much, and after flipping through it, I decided to keep it for myself. It has some fantastic ideas for getting your kids to eat their veggies, and well-thought, well-balanced recipes for meals. I love this book, and have used many of the recipes in it for my family, who have no idea their veggies are hidden inside the great food they are eating!

Many children(and some husbands) won't eat vegetables, to the constant dismay of their mothers. While "hiding" vegetables in the food might be considered unethical by some, most mothers would gladly suffer a little guilt in order to provide a nutritious meal for their family. Ms. Seinfeld has found a way to increase the vitamins in ordinary foods that children love without sacrificing the flavor. By taking a few hours a week, one can prepare, by steaming and blending, many vegetable additions to foods to be used during the rest of the week, or month. After reading the book and utilizing the methods, you may come up with some ideas of your own. The reader may wonder why they hadn't thought of it themselves. The recipes are very good and easy to accomplish. I would recommend this book to anyone with children.

I have to say, having two young children of my own, Jessica Seinfeld definitely takes a creative approach towards getting children to eat healthy. The book is well laid out from beginning to end. The pictures of some of these recipes are great, to the point you want to try and eat the page.

While I have yet to cook any of the recipes, they all look great in ingredients, and in presentation. Her thing is that she doesn't want to fight with her kids at the kitchen table about eating healthy. So, she found away to incorporate fruits and vegetables in the menu so that her children would still have a balanced diet.

She does purees and incorporates them into her main food dishes. She also recommends serving the vegetable/fruit along with the meal, so that your children eventually try it after a period of time. But if they refuse, then you don't have to worry, because the meal is balanced by having the purees sneaked into meals, without the children even knowing...being deceptively delicious!

She also has a section written by her nutritionist, as well as what what we should aim to give our children as portions. The beginning of this cookbook also has suggestions of what to stock your pantry with, recommended tools for cooking, and how to prepare and store the purees.

For anyone with finicky children, or parents just wanting to try out some new recipes, this cookbook is definitely one to consider for the collection.
