This is a memoir book about Sabitri’s life with a dual diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse. She goes through a childhood with feelings of neglect and isolation, which only feeds into rebellion and early symptoms of mental instability during adolescence. The highs and lows carried her through a promising career, marriage, kids, and material possessions. It also took her on a vacation into the underground world of instability with substance abuse, violence, escorting, neglect, and isolation.Where moods were either above the clouds or in the core of the earth’s existence. What happens when the change is not so normal and the consequences bury you? The journey back to the “normal” world is not short nor is it easy.
This is a truly touching book about a woman with Bipolar Disorder. She is so honest and truthful and articulate in her story. The book is an easy read. The beginning and middle are more of a hindsight look at her life before and after she realized she was bipolar. She explains in detail the situations and feelings that she now realizes was sickness. She gives wonderful examples of her mania and depression. She shows us the pain and torment someone with bipolar can go through. She also points out the correlation of sexual addiction and substance abuse that can accompany a Bipolar Disorder. The end of the book are actual excerpts from her personal journal. I felt it was wonderful that she allowed us to actually experience her own words at the time she was feeling them. I felt a so much compassion for what Sabitri went through. She was so honest and forthcoming that anyone with bipolar could read her book and relate. It is truly the feeling of "not being alone" with the illness. I would recommend this book for the fact that it is a compelling story of a woman who, even with an illness, is normal.
