What to Expect the Toddler Years by Arlene Eisenberg

They guided you through pregnancy, they guided you through baby's first year, and now they'll guide you through the toddler years. In a direct continuation of What to Expect When You're Expecting (over 9.6 million copies in print) and What to Expect the First Year (over 5.6 million copies in print), America's bestselling pregnancy and childcare authors turn their uniquely comprehensive, lively, and reassuring coverage to years two and three.

Organized month by month for the second year (months 12-24) and quarterly through the third year (months 24-36), What to Expect the Toddler Years covers each growth and development phase parents are likely to encounter-when they're likely to encounter it. Hundreds of questions and answers treat everything from eating and sleeping problems to day care, tantrums, bottle mouth, shyness, self-esteem, and more. An entire third section of the book is devoted to toilet training, safety, and health, and a fourth covers special concerns-the exceptional child, siblings, and balancing work and parenting.

Remarkably thorough, caring and intelligent, What to Expect the Toddler Years is as valuable for the seasoned parent as it is for the new parent. 2.4 million copies in print.

You know how everyone always says that kids should come with instruction books? Well, this is it. Toddlers are difficult, and more questions are raised at the stage of their development than at any other. Concerned parents are bound to be worried about why their child isn't walking yet when their sister's kid was walking months before. Or they worry because their child doesn't want to eat half of what he's given. This book puts all those fears, and more, to rest.

Like the other "What To Expect" books, you're taken through all the stages and milestones in a step by step manner, so you'll be able to see where your child is developmentally, and what the average is. There's also tips on when you should be concerned, and when to see your doctor. This also makes a really great gift for new parents, as do all the the "What to Expect" books.

Just like the proceeding books in the "What to Expect.." series, "What to Expect the Toddler Years" is a must have for parents of young children. Everything from what shots they need at what age to what home remedies work for a cold are covered. I kept this book very handy the entire time my children were young. It stood as a reference book for me on many occasions. It answers any questions you could possibly have and does so in interesting and easy to understand ways. It helped me avoid late night trips to the er by giving useful tips on such things as: how to lower a fever and the use of humidifiers for upper respiratory infections.

After my incredible disappointment in the depth of What to Expect when You're Expecting, I gave in and bought What to Expect the Toddler Years. OK, I'm done wasting my money now. The book is poorly organized, and very contradictory. If they tell me I shouldn't let my child watch TV, why then would i act out his favorite TV character to distract from a tantrum? I think my biggest disappointment by far, however, was the milestones. Anyone with a child, or even who babysits knows by now that milestones are mere guidelines. Yes, of course, if your child isn't talking by age 2 you should have them checked, but fact is, some children do things late. The book simply insists that something must be dangerously wrong if your child is not EXACTLY on milestone target. I'll take the next toddler book now please.

This book really helped me after I had my first child. I read the original What to Expect When You're Expecting and found it helpful, so I thought the toddler years would also be helpful and I was right. It is a great book to turn to when you have questions about your child's health or behavior. It provides a nice guide to your child's milestones and lets you know that all children are different and may perform the milestones on their own timeline. They do tell you when you should worry and perhaps discuss developmental concerns with your pediatrician. I would recommend this book to any first time parents of toddlers. For me it is a quick reference book to answer and questions or concerns I have and I certainly have gotten my money's worth out of it.

This book is very well written and covers a huge variety of topics. Most of them are right on target age wise when you remember that every child is different and is going to do things at their own paces...too bad THEY can't read the book! The only complaint I have about this book is that the topics are only organized by age. What one child is doing at 14 months, another might not do until 19 months. The parent of the 14 month old hasn't gotten to that section yet and who has time to read a book from cover to cover with a toddler running around?! All in all, though, this is a must have for every parents library. Since children in this age group grow and change so very much in a relitively short period of time, parents will find themselves referring to this book often as new issues crop up. A great gift to give to the PARENTS on baby's first birthday!

After completely adoring the first book, What to Expect When You’re Expecting I was quick to snatch this one up and add it to my library. I was not quite as quick to fall in love it with it. I did find it helpful and easy to browse like the first but I also quickly discovered that because all children are so different many of the topics that interested me did not have answers that applied to me. I rate this book with 4 stars because I am glad I own it, I have used it, it is well written and easy to read like the first but at the same time I warn that it may not always give you what you’re looking for! The good news is – even if you don’t get the answers you were personally hoping for you will at least see what others might struggle with and the similarities can often make a new mom feel pretty good about her mothering skills!

This book is one of the most comprehensive parenting books I have ever read in my life. It covers just about every scenario you can think of, from teething, to fevers, to even different unusual childhood illnesses. It gives great suggestions for talking to pediatricians, as well as first-hand know-how from other parents.
