I received this book from my sister-in-law as a hand me down. It was highly recommended from her. And it was such a big help!As a new mother, I did not know what to expect bringing a newborn home from the hospital. Each new thing was frightening because I was not sure if my baby was doing "normal" or "average" things. This book really helped ease the fear of being a first time mom (and dad! My husband is also addicted to the book!)

The book is divided up in months, so you can follow along as your child grows. We tend to read about a month ahead so we can know what to expect in our daughter's growth and development. Each section contains very helpful questions and answers, too!

The book is such an easy read and very insightful. If you enjoyed "What to Expect When You're Expecting," you will definitely enjoy "What to Expect the First Year!"

What to expect the first year – was gifted to me when I had my second child by my sister who had just returned from US. This book came to me as a BIG surprise as we don't really have any consolidated books on this topic in our country! It gave me in-depth knowledge about every single thing that I would like to know about my infant, but didn’t know whom to ask. Though it was my second baby, I still had many doubts in my mind. It was almost like I had totally forgotten how I reared my first one!

With this book beside me, I could face all such problems in a confident manner and nurture my baby in the best manner possible. It was like my mentor, my guide-book, my reference book for everything you could ever ask.

I deeply convey my heartiest thanks to all mothers who have contributed for such a wonderful book! I would definitely recommend it to all my friends, family and colleagues, whoever needs it. Just one regret – why didn’t I have this book for reference after my first baby was born…. 

Just like What to Expect When You're Expecting, this book is a staple for parents. I think all parents (both new and pro) know that the first year is nerve wracking. You call the doctor every five minutes for every sniffle and cross eyed look.

This book takes you step by step through all your child's developmental stages- physical, mental, and emotional. It covers every little thing, from feeding to clothing to getting sick.

I loved that you can check your child's developmental progress against what's normal for that age. So if you're child isn't doing something common by a certain age, you can talk to your pediatrician about it. It's also covers all the little basics, from how to swaddle, how much your baby will eat, what colors they like, you name it!

When people say that babies should come with manuals, they need to check out this book!

I love this book! I can't say enough about it! When I had my first child, I was terrified about how to care for him and be a good mom. This book saved me; it was always there to answer my questions. When I had concerns about a fever or a rash, I would read the book first to see how to treat it or decide whether or not I needed to call the doctor. I really like that it gives you the milestones your child should be reaching each month and explains that all children develop at different paces, so not to worry if they are not exactly on schedule. Of course it does help you decide whether or not to be concerned about developmental delays and advises you to speak to your pediatrician. I would recommend this book to all new moms, it really does help you get through the first year without all of the anxiety.

This is actually the only What to Expect book I really liked. It seemed much more in depth to me, and not as expecting as the toddler years book. It gives you when children are approximately supposed to reach certain milestones, but also hurries to assure you they don't always reach them at the same time. This is one I'd definitely use again if I have more kids!

When my daughter was born, I had a lot of questions. What to Expect the First Year had a lot of answers! Best of all, the information provided in the book is easy to read and understand. Practical tips and news and advice about the different stages of a child’s first year of life are related in easily formatted chapters and highlighted sidebars packed with simple to digest information. That means a lot to busy, often too-stressed-to-concentrate, new moms and dads! Throughout my daughter’s, and then my son’s, first year I turned to this book for everything: I always found what I needed to know. From feeding, burping, gurgling and spit up, from first foods to first words, from the safest toys to the best way to travel with a baby in tow, to how to get better sleep with a new baby in the house, and SO much more, this a book that became my bible. I give it my very highest recommendation!

Yes, the first of this series is a truly valuable book, but in my opinion, this is the one that REALLY soothed my fears about having a child the most; after all, you now are RESPONSIBLE for a human being who is now a freestanding individual and helpless! The task is daunting and parents are exhausted, not thinking clearly and most often panicking at usually something silly. This book is chaptered by the month age of your child and it tells you what to expect developmentally and what to worry about. It also gives info on immunizations, what to feed the little baby, and recipes too. Lots of question/answer dialogue going on in the book too. I found that sometimes those obscure questions that you are wondering about your child are answered too. It was my bathroom "bible" book that whole first year. Because of this book, I am an expert at raising children! Well, ok, not really; but I recommend it to at least boost your confidence and calm your fears dramatically!

When I was preparing to have my baby, I was buying anything and everything to further assist me on preparing to be a mother. I ran across this book at a friend's house, and she offered it to me. Of course, I took her up on the offer, and I am glad that I did.

This book taught me everything I needed to know about how to feed, care, comfort, and understand my child better. This book is by far the best thing out there for future mothers today. I would recommend this book to anyone. It even told you the best products to use for your baby and how to self-medicate yourself after having a child. Crazy to think that book can help someone become more comfortable for such a huge change in their life. I give this book five stars, and if you haven't read it... and you're an expecting mother.. don't hesitate, get out there and get it!

This book was so wonderful. The challenges of being a brand new mom are usually met with the horror of "is my child progressing right." This can be one of the most terrifying things to endure. You have this precious baby and now what do you do with it? This book helped me answer those questions and calm my fears. I was very accustomed to the writing style because I had used the pregnancy book published by the same people. They break down every month and tell you what your baby should be doing, what they might be doing, and when to get concerned. It was a great relief to be able to reference a book instead of calling the doctor or bothering other people. It also helps to answer the questions you don't want people to know you are wondering about. I would definitely recommend this to all my friends.

This is such an amazing gift. I bought this for a friend who was having a baby. I have always wondered how you're supposed to know how to do things when you've never had a baby, all these questions and what not. I always wondered if there was a book that answered all these questions and this is it. I bought this for my friend and she simply loved it. She read it from cover to cover and treated it like her bible. She even ended up giving it to her sister when she was pregnant. This book is something that I felt should have been written and I'm glad that it has. I'm going to have to take a look at the other "What to Expect" books.

I love this book! I have read it over and over again. It was given to me at my baby shower, and it's been so helpful over the course of my baby's first year. Loads of information that's so extremely helpful. I can't think of one thing they didn't put in this book.

It's definitely like a baby Bible. A must have for ANY first time mom.

This book was a complete lifesaver for me. I didn't have a clue what to expect. This book covers parts of the "Expecting" portion, including labor and delivery, and the first precious weeks at home when you are still thinking, "I don't know if I can do this...". It was a lifesaver, and let me know that what I was feeling, what was happening, and how my son was developing was perfectly normal. It answered the questions that I didn't think to ask my doctor when my son was jaundice, when he had a pyloric stenosis, when he ran a fever in the middle of the night, when he started getting teeth, when he was reaching developmental milestones--everything! It was a lifesaver so many times, and it was worth it's weight in gold. Any time any friend of mine tells me she is expecting, I HIGHLY recommend this book for when the baby arrives. It is by far the most resourceful self-help book I have ever read. I read it cover to cover at least three times, and then used it as a resource to look things up with both my first and second sons. Trust when I say, you won't be disappointed with this book, whether you have your first, third, or tenth child!

I am an older mom who just started over after having a son 20 years ago. My little one's are still in diapers with one being a newborn.

I was given this book from a very good friend of mine, and I cannot recommend it enough. It is well written and takes the guessing out of the many things that happen in baby's first year. I don't have to look at something my precious is doing or not doing yet and wonder if it's normal or if he needs to see someone.

This is a book that I will keep handy and never file away, only when our little one is past the first year will I consider sharing it with another new mom.

The WHAT TO EXPECT... series is a wonderful set of books on everything that you need to expect when you're pregnant and when you have your baby. It's basically a "For Dummies" guide to pregnancy and child care.

And let me tell you, that's an amazing thing.

No question is too stupid to be found in this book. If you're wondering how much your kid needs to eat as a newborn, then this book will have the answer for you. No matter how dumb you think your question is, the answer will be in this book.

It's very reassuring, and I make sure to get it for now parents everywhere.

This was my baby Bible during my son's first year. I am the mother of one and as we know they don't come with instructions. I read this book from cover to cover and it really made things much easier for me to understand! I started off with the What To Expect When You're Expecting book which erased the mysteries of pregnancy and I would recommend it to all first time mothers, whether it's given as a gift or you make the purchase. When I came across this book, not only did it erase the mysteries of actually caring for the child it kept me on point as to immunizations, what I should be looking for developmentally and other important issues that crop up with new parents not just child issues. I would recommend this book to any first time parent or parents as well as those who aren't first timers! It's an excellent source of information.

I was predisposed to enjoy What To Expect the First Year, since we are graduates of What To Expect When You’re Expecting. We loved that book, and this one follows up well. We bought it when our firstborn turned about six months, since we believe in good preparation. Like the first book, my wife read it page-by-page, and I flipped through, especially by reading over her shoulder while she was nursing the baby. Of course, that would lead me to an article I’d get interested in, and then before you know it I was flipping through on my own. The book is organized month-by-month, and one of the most helpful features is how it describes well typical child progression. If my baby seems slow in sitting up, for example, I look at the month she is in, and find out that, yes, some children are walking by now, but it is not at all unusual to still be laying there, happy turning over. This type of reassurance is invaluable for first-time parents. We highly recommend the book.

My wife and I read "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and it was amazing so we were really excited to read this book. Let me tell you, all of your questions will be answered in this book. Also, the book is written in a way that is easy to understand. The tips in it are very practical and easy to apply to everyday life. It speaks about different stages of the first year of your child's life. The sidebars of the pages are packed with highlighted "quick tips" and that is very helpful when you're looking through a book trying to find answers in a frenzy! This book really covers it all from burping, feeding, first foods, safe toys, how to travel with baby, and most importantly, how to get more sleep with a new baby in the house. HIGHLY recommended!!
