Every family experiences power struggles, but these daily tugs-of-war are not inevitable. KIDS, PARENTS, AND POWER STRUGGLES presents strategies for getting to the root of the emotions and needs that can create these conflicts. At the same time, the author discusses how such tussles can teach your child essential skills, like how to be assertive rather than aggressive and how to solve problems.
It is worth taking the time to read this book, to put the power struggles you face with your kids into the proper perspective. There will always be struggles, BUT they do not have to take over your house! This book offers suggestions for coping and for diffusing some of these struggles. The conflicts in life, give us opportunities to work through issues with our kids and teach them how to work through conflict and cope with crisis. You will find that being consistent and firm, but kind will take you far in your most important role - parent!
I have read many different parenting technique manuals and how to guides, and am extremely happy that Mary Kurcinka wrote a book that actually works!
Parenting twins who are now teenagers, there is a consistent struggle for power and dominance in my household that used to always revert to yelling and the phrase “Because I said so”. Not only was this not benefiting me but it wasn’t benefiting my girls.
What I liked specifically about this book is that it focuses on teaching you to get at the root of the problem, not just drum up some mundane solution and giving you techniques to do so. By discovering the reasoning for reactions to the girls and their behavior, it helped me to understand and change my own. This provided our entire family with the tools to communicate proactively and express ourselves without resorting to yelling and slamming doors.
No matter what age your children are, this book is a must read!
