Kick Up Your Heels...Before You're Too Short To Wear Them: How to Live a Long, Healthy, Juicy Life by Loretta LaRoche

For the last 20 years, Loretta LaRoche has been delighting readers, audiences, and PBS television viewers with her wacky and wise insights about life, love, and the insanity of the modern world. Now, in her most deeply personal book yet, Loretta addresses the most exciting challenge that we all face—one that she now finds herself facing every day: How do we age well? And can humor, dignity, honesty, wisdom, and other virtues ease the path?
Our society is youth obsessed: Beauty products, special exercises, designer vitamins, plastic surgery, and certain medications are promoted as “the” ways to enhance life. While these formulas may have some merit, they’re not enough to prepare us to have a rich, authentic life filled with passion and juiciness. Why do we wait until we’re almost dead before we focus on how to age well? Every school system in the country should be preparing us for the inevitable process of aging and how to do it well. Our parents, our schools, and the media should all be teaching us that aging is a process that begins at birth . . . not something to be feared and avoided. Those who continue to be hardy and live long and healthy lives understand that the real path to vitality requires connection, playfulness, flexibility, grace, tenacity, resiliency, curiosity, learning, and good humor.
With her trademark humor and practical wisdom, Loretta tackles how to live a long, healthy, juicy life—using herself and many of her friends and mentors as metaphors. Filled with practical advice, lifestyle skills, wisdom, and spirituality, Kick Up Your Heels . . . is a mental health spa that will inspire you and your family to live with joy, harmony, and peace while you still have the time!

Loretta LaRoche wrote the book of all books about aging and does it with humor, truth and fun! Before reading her book, I never looked forward to getting older because it seemed like as you age, your life becomes not a life at all but after reading this book, I am waving at 40 and wondering just why it's taking so long to get here? You know when you are young, it's expected to look good, have fun, etc....just the norm but not many people see the fun in aging so this book gives a perspective to cause you to never purchase another bottle of anti-aging cream again and to invest money in make up and some sexy shoes! OK not that crazy but as you can tell, the book easily will excite the reader. Lots of advice and personal experience to help you greet age with grace and joy!

Aging is a irreversible natural process for every living organism including all human beings. But is it possible to delay this process? The answer is very simple and it is YES. There are two types of aging in our system. One is physical aging and other one is mental aging.
In her book “Kick Up Your Heels...Before You're Too Short To Wear Them” Loretta LaRoche has explained how to live long life happily. According to her aging is a natural process for every body which should be accepted gracefully and this process should be enjoyed. The theme of the book is that you can lead a happy life with your correct life style. In her usual humorous style of writing, she is making us to laugh again and again. I don’t see a better book to make us to feel homely with the word aging. I think the message from this book is if you are mentally fit ,then it will influence your physical health resulting in a happy life for ever. So friends I honestly believe that reading this book will definitely bring positive changes in our life and change our mind set about aging. This book may be a remedy for those persons who are victims of depression. Go and get it and also book extra copies to give as a gift to your beloved ones. I think this gift will be remembered by them for ever and they will be grateful to you ever.

This book is a great gift for that sassy woman in your life who has a great sense of humor and a lust for life. Loretta LaRoche's take on aging is inspirational and different. She believes that, instead of focusing on the negative aspects of aging, we should be taught from birth that aging is a journey that needs to be both respected and enjoyed. Many parts of this book brought me to tears with laughter. Other parts made me think about how short life is and how we need to focus on more important things than wrinkling. This book is a must read for anyone feeling down about getting older and may cause you to go out and do something crazy like flying a kite, wrestling with a loved one, or even playing kick ball. This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it!

In “Kick Up Your Heels”, Loretta LaRoche reinterates her basic formula for living with her usual credo of common sense and humor. What sets this book apart is her take on aging well, of being “juicy.” If we fill our lives with experiences, humor, dignity, and a sense of wonder in the world, she likens us to fruit that is ripe and full of juice, fruit that when is it bitten into, sometimes squirts on to others.

Ms. LaRoche says that in our youth-obsessed society, it isn’t the latest cream or potion, it is our passions and enthusiasm that make us happy, no matter what our age. She feels that no matter how old we get, we can still have a quality of life that cannot be bought. Rather than working on the outside and how we look, we should be getting outside of ourselves and perhaps volunteering, dating, learning, laughing.

Although she is divorced from her second husband, she has gone on to Match.com and is looking to enjoy herself and keep her quality of life strong.
Ms. LaRoche is inspirational as always, and to a middle-aged woman like myself, eager to read her other books.
