A plain-English resource for people suffering from the aftereffects of a traumatic experience
An estimated five percent of Americans-over 13 million people-suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at any given time, and approximately eight percent will develop it at some time in their lives. And, with recent traumatic events such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina as well as the ongoing war in Iraq, the incidence of PTSD is on the rise. Written for PTSD sufferers and their loved ones, this practical, unintimidating guide gives people the lowdown on symptoms, details today's various treatment options, offers practical coping strategies for day-to-day life, and even shows how to help children with PTSD.
This is a good Dummies book. I don’t like all of them but this one is very informative and helpful. It gives a lot of insight into the disorder. It helps those individuals who have been diagnosed with this disorder and also the family and loved ones of the individual. The person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder continues not just to think about a catastrophic event but actually relives it on both a mental and physical level. The book aspires to help the victim cope with the flashbacks and nightmares that accompany PTSD. It also helps the victim to determine if they wish to be treated via medications and what medications are available and might be useful. The book is also designed for the family and loved ones to be able to provide help for the victim.
