This is truly an amazing book written about creating a healthy family life. This book is great for parents and granparents alike. I have suggested this book to many friends and I know they have passed on the recommendation to others as well. What I really liked was the way it was written. Dr. Phil really opens up about the way he grew up so you really feel like he knows what he's talking about because he has experienced it. He gives some great solutions for problems that are relevant to today such as dealing with the situations teens can deal with and that dynamic on the family and communicating with your children. I feel like his advice is very practical and the goal of the book is to make families function better abd be closer.

I love Dr. Phil and this book was great. He details the importance of family and how to make them a priority. He has great tips for bettering your parenting skills. I would definitely recommend this well written book!

This book was a really great read. It helps you understand the importance of family. It also informs you on how to re-prioritize your life and where your family belongs on the list. My husband was having so much trouble figuring this out. Someone mentioned this book and bought it for us. He read it, and it's done so much for our marriage and family life. I couldn't be happier. I would recommend this book to anyone that needs help opening a family member's eyes to what's the most important thing in life. Family should always come first, and I couldn't have said it any better than this book.

This is a really good book. I have 2 young daughters. This book helped to remind me of the importance of staying involved in all aspects of their lives. In this day and age, sometimes it is hard to focus on your family, but it is so important. Dr. Phil emphasizes the important roles that parents play in their children's lives. You only get one shot to be a good parent, so you better do a great job. I recommend that all parents read this book.

This book was a delight to read. I have a wonderful husband and two beautiful boys, and we have always lived by the mantra that our family will always come before everything else. This book certainly emphasized that, and it was refreshing to hear from a professional. Dr. Phil's book was extremely non-judgmental regarding different types of parenting styles and techniques, which made all the difference in the world to me--instead of focusing on what I have been doing wrong, it helped me focus on what I am doing RIGHT, which is certainly helpful. His ideas are wonderful about setting boundaries and being a parent, and it includes two tests: one for you to determine what kind of parenting style you have, and another to determine what kind of personality your child(ren) has. This is important in accomodating your parenting style to better suit your child's needs, and to be a better parent. It was an overall wonderful read, and easy to follow and understand. Highly recommended.

Family First by Dr Phil was an enjoyable read. I did not purchase my copy but borrowed it from the local library. I took notes down of the steps and things I wanted to apply to my family situation. It gave me some good steps on dealing with my son’s temper tantrums. It was good to see some of the things I was doing was on the right track in raising my kids. It was refreshing that the tone of the book was non judgmental as the book is an easy light reading material every parent could use. There were some areas that I have improved upon in raising my kids. Because of the information I gathered from the book, there are less temper tantrums and more peaceful communication in my household. The book helps parents to realize their parenting style and the learning style of their children which makes for happier children.

This is one of the best books on building a healthy family life I have ever read! I think it is a great book for parents of children and even grand children of any age. I wish it had been around when my daughter was young. I have recommended this book to others and have even bought copies for people in my family.

What I liked most about this was the viewpoint from which it was written. Dr. Phil is open about his own problems growing up so you can relate to him as a person who has been there and done that. He then goes on to give you real solutions to modern day problems like communicating with your children, defending your family against cultural problems, coping with the difficult problems teens can bring to the family, etc. He gives practical advice on how to make your family closer and more functional.

"Family First" by Dr. Phil McGraw is a candid monologue about how to develop and maintain a healthy family. The book is surprisingly articulate, but it does have a "tell it to you straight" voice. It is Dr. Phil, after all. I read the book when I was 25, without a family of my own yet, in hopes to glean some advice for the future. The book does offer advice, and affirmation to those with more traditional views of family. I found myself nodding in agreement to much of his advice and philosophy. It's not overly preachy; but the tone is rather helpful and surprisingly non-judgmental. I know I said surprisingly a lot, because I've come to know Dr. Phil as brutal and condescending (which is why I got the book in the first place!), but this book was more of a polished version of him. Good, solid, timeless advice for you if you want to have a family, or want to repair the relationship the one you do have.
