From remembering their own life experience or to watching their own children grow, most people recognize that the preteen years, ages nine to thirteen, can be one of the most awkward times in life-a period of tremendous physical and emotional change. At this age, youngsters are eager to leave the "kid" stage, yet are uncertain about what adolescence will bring; they'd rather listen to peers over parents, and hear all too often to "wait until you're older. " Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul will guide kids through this transition.
Written by and for preteens, this uplifting collection of stories touches on the emotions and situations they experience every day: making and losing friends, fitting in while keeping their personal identity, discovering the opposite sex, dealing with pressures at school including violence, and coping with family issues such as divorce.
We bought this for our youngest niece and she loved it. At 12 years old, she was really struggling with so many things. She was trying to be like her big sister, yet not old enough to do the things her older sister was doing. Also, she wanted to play with her dolls, yet felt too old for that at the same time. This book really hit home with her and made her realize that she isn't the only person in the world who felt the way she did. The stories inspired her and I know that she has recommended the book to many of her friends. HIGHLY recommended!
My son usually takes books from the library dealing with subject matter that he is currently interested in which ranges from medicine to hockey to science to aircraft and on and on the list goes. He took this book out for some reason and could not put it down. He would share parts of it with me and later told me that it was one of the best books he ever read! That in itself is quite a review and I would highly recommend this book to all preteens. My son is an honor student as well as an athlete who has a wide variety of friends. Although he has always been mature for his age, this book spoke volumes to him and I am extremely glad he found it!
There’s a good reason the Chicken Soup books are so popular. Each one of them provides motivational, inspirational, life affirming true stories that readers can relate to. Stories that readers can remember, and use to improve their own attitudes about life and what it brings. Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul is no different! My daughter took it out of the library a few months ago, and after reading just a few chapters she liked it so much that she shared it with me. Together we read heartfelt stories about the funny, embarrassing, exciting, and scary roads that preteen children experience every single day. The story that touched my daughter the most related the tale of a young girl whose best friend falls ill and later dies. We cried together as we read the words that recounted the heroine’s feelings of shock, confusion and anger – and then of acceptance and ultimately, peace. This book will make readers cry, but it will also make them laugh at loud. A warm, positive reading experience for preteen’s!
I am a big fan of the Chicken Soup series, so I was thrilled to find this on the shelf just in time for my 11 year old daughter's birthday. She is at such a tough age...too old for Barbies, too young for boys. We both love reading and rereading the stories in this book. For me they bring back memories of being that age. For her they help to make it an exciting age that she's looking forward to remembering when she grows up. Another great book by The Soup Team. You won't be disappointed!
the whole series of chicken soup for the soul book are simply awesome, whoever thought to put real stories that warmed the soul into the pages of one comforting book was a genius. The book for the pre teen soul helped me personally with many issues dealing with my parents, school, grades, friends, boys, and just growing up. this book made me excited to grow up, i made adult hood seem like one big adventure, and an exciting thrill ride. though the book also shared heart wrnching stories of defeat and anguish, they always have a meaningful ending that i learned so much from. All in all, the books are great, and keep you glued to the pages till your finished.
I bought this for my nine year old daughter in hopes that she might be able to relate to some of the stories. She read the book from cover to cover in a short period of time and was really affected by the stories of the other tweens. But, I think parents should be aware that many of the stories focus on grief and despair and cover topics like divorce, illnesses, and even death. There are some really heart breaking accounts in this book, but they are also stories of strong children who are able to overcome in the end. If your child comes from a home where they have not come face to face with these issues, be prepared for lots of questions. My daughter was even a bit scared. I honestly think that the recommended age of nine may be cutting it a little close and would instead wait until your child is a little older.
This book of short stories is a wonderful way to initiate talks about most anything between you and and your children. The stories are real and offer a view of life that many children haven't had an opportunity to experience. Thus, you are able to discuss situations with your children with "what if" and offer your own values and beliefs regarding the stories. It has prompted many value conversations between my daughter and me and I have learned that she and her friends also discuss many of the stories and how they would handle similar situations.
