Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: A Practical Guide for Improving Communication and Getting What You Want in Your Relatio by John Gray

Popular marriage counselor and seminar leader John Gray provides a unique, practical and proven way for men and women to communicate and relate better by acknowledging the differences between them.
Once upon a time Martians and Venusians met, fell in love, and had happy relationships together because they respected and accepted their differences. Then they came to earth and amnesia set in: they forgot they were from different planets.

This book was all the hit back in the day. You would hear about it all over the place. There was even a thing about it on 20/20. I didn't watch it, but from hearing all about it, I thought it would be good to watch. I love the philosophy about people and love and their communication between people and thought that this would be a good book for it. I was kind of wrong. This is more like writing a book of stuff that everyone kind already knew and like seeing it in a book. I think it kind of takes the whole... Men talk like this and Women talk like this and they can only get along like this. I understand why some of my friends said that they felt insulted by this book because it kind of says that you're not able to grow and change and communicate on our own accord. I think it's an interesting read, just don't take it too seriously.

I thought this book had some good points. It was well written and entertaining. It made sense but kinda drags on. I did get an understanding of how men are thinking when they "cave" and it explains the need men have for space. I liked this book.

I read and re-read this book many many times when I was on the dating scene and then when I found 'the one' too. This is a great book to understand the opposite sex. Men and women do think differently. It's nice to have some basis to understand their motivations because you might be more likely to sympathize or just accept their viewpoint; which in turn, could lead to less resentment, less confusion, and more easiness in a relationship. That being said, I would not be rigid about believing what's in here either. Some men are willing to step outside their natural bents, and know that in order to make a relationship work, you might have to talk openly at times. Some women are less 'emotional' and don't need to talk it all out. As people we all vary in nature, and that is why I would also use this book as a loose guide to men and women's dispositions. God wouldn't want us to think that ALL men are from Mars and ALL women are from Venus. With billions of people on the planet, what fun would that be?

Although a lot of this book wasn't as practical as intended, it was definitely a way to open up the lines of communication with one's partner. There were certain sections where we both found ourselves shaking our heads in the affirmative and other sections where one was negative and the other affirmative. For that it served the purpose of opening up the lines of communication. Now we just need to figure out how to break through the language barriers of those from Mars!

This book doesn't deserve the attention it got. Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus felt to me like it was all about pigeon-holing. Men absolutely feel one way, women another. Each need to be treated according to the stereotypes laid out here.

This really bothered me, mostly because I live in the real world. I've known tons of sensitive men that have no problems talking about their feeling, that are thoughtful. On the flip side, I've known plenty of women to be aggressive and loathe to get "touchy feely".

This books assumes that every man and woman fits a cookie cutter mold. It certainly doesn't take into consideration this female reader that loves Jet Li movies and hates cliched long stem roses.

There are some people who used to swear by this, but most that I know moved on to something else. This is just to black and white, with no room for variety.

Its amazing to believe how an author could do so much extensive research in a field which God Himself has guarded closely 

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus – is one such reading which opens secrets and will throw light into the dark dungeons of the characteristics of males and females, as God has made them, very different. It definitely helps you understand the other gender, which is sometimes very difficult and confusing. It gives you an idea about the other sex regarding what he/she thinks, or what he/she means when he says that, how he/she takes life and works around it….and all such details.
Sometimes we fail to understand each other leading to disputes, arguments and fights. This can be prevented if there is someone to guide us, help us. I’m very thankful to the author for sharing his study with us readers, helping us settle more easily into relationships and helping us to know the other person in a better, enhanced way!

A friend gave me this book to read after swearing she found it very useful. I love to read so I gave it a try.
This was not on my list on top 1000 books but the author does make a few good points and suggestions. I did find the authors writing style amusing and easy to read.
I do agree 100% than men and women are very different and he made very good points about the different ways men and women communicate. I agree that most men tend to want to solve a problem for you instead of communicate. However unlike the women the author describes I ACTUALLY like it when my husband tries to solve a problem for me.
I laughed a lot reading about men and their "caves". I do find that to be somewhat true.
This is an amusing book but I really didn't learn much.

This has to be the least-helpful self-help book I've ever read. The author spends the entire book giving excuses for poor behavior on the part of both genders. Even worse, he includes even more bad behavior tips as a means for getting your partner to do what you want. In an age when there is much research into communication, a book that promotes poor communication and problem solving skills is not what the world needs.

Many people will say this book is not true, or does not tell you anything you did not already know, although that may be true, the author will really make you think about the difference in communtication styles between men and women.

I always thought my husband was crazy, and after reading this book I realize he must be thinking the same way about me. Men and Women definitely communicate differently, and to read about those differences in a light hearted manner without the tension that comes from these differences, makes me really recommend this book. It is not earth shattering, but very insightful way to look at the battle of the sexes.

Despite what people are saying, this book is a classic. People made it a classic because it was that good. We cannot accuse an old book of being boring simply because we've been force fed the same message over and over again. This book was in many ways the beginning of this philosophy. So what I'm saying is, this book laid the ground work for a lot of other theories. While it seems like "duh!" so did gravity, but because someone "realized it" they got credit for it, and so should Mr. Gray.

I read this book at the library — and quickly thanked myself for not buying it. Frankly, I found this book to be a bore. Yes, couples need to accept their differences but I don't think the two sexes are THAT different. Men especially speak clearly through their actions. There is so "secret language" women need to learn, it's simply to be observant. That's my humble opinion.

I started to take some offense at certain language that implied women are shallow and wimpy. But hey, it went on to say that men are "caveman-like" and incapable of accepting help. Sheesh. To me, this seems a bit ignorant. And hmmm, can we say gender bias?

There are some hints at understanding your partner but I wouldn't recommend anyone truly take the advice in this book to heart. In may very well doom your relationship. Take it with a grain of salt. Please don't use it as a relationship handbook.

Men are From Mars and Women are From Venus is a great book at teaching the basics of the differences between the two sexes. Though a somewhat controversial subject, “viva la difference” has been under attack by the idea that women can do things the same as men However, biological and psychological studies affirm that no matter how much women deserve equal pay for equal work, they remain essentially different in their make-up. The implications of this fact in relationships spell the difference between success and failure, happiness and misery. By heeding the advice in the book, couples will be given the tools to understand how better to relate to and understand each other.

I was raised in a family of all boys, and was quite surprised at the uniqueness, shall we say, of my wife after we married. Though all was well, by reading the book we both discovered flaws in our ways of thinking about each other. With a willingness to change, our marriage improved from what was already a good foundation. It can save the marriage (or even dating relationship) of those who do not find themselves so well off. Highly recommended.

There has been a lot of hype over this book. I am sure that there are those who really loved it, but as for me, I didn't. I thought it was just too simplified to think that all the problems between the sexes boils down to being men and women with different ways of thinking. Yes men are more focused and targeted hunter types, but not all men in my life are that way. There are a lot of women who are gatherers and they like to talk a lot more than men, but not all women are like that either. I know I'm not. Men talk a lot more than I do. Although they don't listen as well as I'd like, some men can relate to feelings and can show sensitivity. I think this book is just too stereotypical and it does nothing to make things any better by pointing out the differences in the sexes.

I picked this up at a yard sale because I remember a friend mentioning how remarkable it was. She sang it's praises and would often tell me how it was improving her marriage. I figured I was only spending a dollar so it wouldn't be all that bad.

Boy, do I regret wasting my time and money on this book.

A lot of his helpful recommendations were based on common sense. I found myself thinking "Oh? Really?" in a sarcastic tone. Even my husband found it hilariously repetitive.

The rest of the book was full of stereotypes that I frankly could not relate to. I was a bit offended by the insinuations that women are clingy. I have never been clingy or over emotional, and many of my friends do not seem this way either.

I'm not sure if it was intentional, but it seemed as if Dr. Gray was insinuating that women were inferior to men. I do not believe that there is a weaker sex and this book was full of that idea.

I found it entertaining later that Dr. Gray was divorced. I'm not exactly up to par with taking advice from someone who not only seems sexist, but also failed in his own personal marriage.

I have read this book many many times and every time it teaches me something new on improving my communication with someone. The first time I read this, I was just beginning my first affair. I thought I was in love, and it pained me a lot to see that nothing was working out well enough. I heard about this book in a cafe, and thought - What the heck ! How can a book tell me what can I improve in my personal relationship. I came across it in a old books sale and thought of giving it a cursory read. I started reading it at the counter, and after just 2 pages, I decided to buy it. This is the book which will tell you that you have been doing it wrong. It will kick you where it hurts, but you will be thankful nevertheless as it will make your life with the ones you love so much easier and fun to live. It is amazing how small things can be so easily misconstrued. It is not as if the other person does not want to understand you, its just that they cant! You two have been using different languages all along, and the fact is that you will. So do not try to change them, try to understand what they really want. Men are from Mars, and Women are from Venus, and this book will bring them much closer.

The first time I picked up this book was over fifteen years ago. My friend and I were just coming out of relationships, and had heard of the book. We figured we would give it a read. I was visiting with her, and we read it out loud to each other every night. Could it be true, that we were doing every thing wrong, when we were dating, and attracting new men in our life? Were we too clingy? Were we calling too much? When they say we will call, did that mean the next day, when it really meant in a few days? I really did like some of the thoughts of how we are from two different worlds, and words mean different things to men and women. That is definitely true. I am older now, married, and can see how my husband and I have different definitions on "I will be home later?" To me "later," means two hours or less to him it means "whenever!" Funny thing, when we were unpacking one day, my husband found the book and starting reading it. He said he wanted to understand where us women were coming from. Guess it works both ways.

This book is written in an engaging and friendly way that made it easy to read. Dr. Gray describes how women and men tend to interact with each other and gives advice on how to deal with common problems created by our different needs and communicating styles.

Overall this book offers some good advice but it relies heavily on the idea that the "average man" is a certain way and the "average woman" is another way. Certainly some tendencies can be highlighted, but I found it difficult to identify with a lot of his examples because I wasn't always like the women he described (and my husband was definitely not like the men). Frankly I found the traditional roles he describes (ie. women talk about problems because they want sympathy but men actually want a solution) rather patronizing.

Dint know what to expect out of this book. As I started reading, I had different emotions. I laughed, was serious, Shocked, curious and felt ashamed as I realised the mistakes I have done. But at the end felt happy that atleast now I knew more about Men (My man especially). The Author has full experience of what he was talking about. So I could consider the advice he is giving me. And I was particularly facinated with the way he put all those things together. Fewtimes I felt he was talking about the same thing over and over again. But when I tried to glance through the book again felt the message was little different. Now that I am a better wife to my husband (my husband also feels the change, this is the great part) I would strongly suggest everyone to read this book, both husband/wife or Boyfriend/girl friend. It realy helps eachother to understand what the other person expects. After few months you read this book, it is certain that you might forget most of things from this book. But YOU will remember the main things, the one thing you shoud not forget. I guess that is the reason why the Author has repeated few statements over and over again in this book so that it gets registered in our mind. Go ahead read this book and have a happy relationship.

I have not come across a more imaginative way to describe the differences between the sexes. And surely that is a good reason to explore this book. But after the initial excitement over the turn of phrase, you may find an endlessly repetitive narration of the obvious.

Does this book help better relationships? Yes, it would appear so at a theoritical level... like you know where you are coming from... millions of years of hunter-gatherer mentality can't be undone in 100 days after the courtship ends (!) In my case, that understood, we separated as friends. Sure helped save our planet from being home to more confused interplanetary souls.

The main focus of Men from Mars, Women are from Venus is that men and women are so different (largely because of their separate styles and methods of communication) that they are practically from different planets.

A key observation that John Gray makes is that it is important for a couple to know each others own communication styles for a more successful relationship. Thus, this could be a good book for a couple interested in learning more about one another.

One of the faults of this book is that Gray does not really list any similarities between men and women, only differences. Similarities would have made the book more complete, to me. Gray also addresses what genders do in general rather than looking at individuals. He takes for granted that everyone is the same as if there is no uniqueness aside from male and female. He makes the human race seem like much simpler beings than they really are.

Aside from its faults, however, this was a good book. It really helps people realize different needs in communication.

This book is definitely an eye-opener when it comes to exploring and understanding the true differences between the genders. Reading this book gave me insightful information on how men and women not only speak a different language but it also helped me understand that a man’s brain perceives and processes things much differently then a woman’s brain. This information is extremely beneficial to couples in understanding each other in a much better light in order to strengthen their relationship.

While I found this book extremely beneficial to me in bettering my relationship with my partner, I also found it a great asset in the better understanding of my sons and was better able to say and do things that they would better process and understand.

I think this book is a must read for both men and women that are in committed relationships or not, after all we still have to interact with the opposite gender as well as having a wide variety of relationships with the other gender.

I was given this book as a present when I got married and it was very helpful. It shows some good pointers as to how to get your point across to your spouse. Like the book says, we speak a totally different language and what is meant by one person is not always taken that way by the other. I would highly recommend this book to newlyweds and people looking to build a stronger relationship. It's not just for beginners, I feel it has refresher course as well. Another good thing about this book is that it doesn't just apply to a man and a woman, it can apply to a mother and a son or a father and a daughter. Just because they are your flesh and blood, doesn't mean they think like you. I would suggest this book to any and everyone who deals with the opposite sex on a daily basis.

This book is a really good beginners guide to understanding relationships between men and women. One of the most important things I learned in this book is that men and women do not communicate using the same language. Even though it may be English it as though we are speaking completely different languages. I also like that it points out our very basic and fundamental differences. For Example, John Gray discusses the need for a woman to talk about a problem and not actually fix it. She just wants to vent. On the other hand, there is a man's need to have some alone time to figure out problems. This book will lay a good foundation in your communications with the opposite sex. All in all it is a good book, but there are more in depth ones out there.

After reading this book, I learned that men and women communicate differently and why. It has a lot of useful information in it, and although I am not currently in a relationship myself, it gives me a better understanding of how to communicate with my teenage son and why there is a lack of communication on his part sometimes, which is helpful. Being a woman, it's sometimes hard to give a man space when he needs it, and this book explains why a man sometimes needs space and why they won't talk.

I would also add, however, that I used some of the advice given in this book while I was married, and I personally feel that I was treated like a doormat during that time. Although some of the advice is good, other advice should be considered very carefully before utilizing it.
