The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

From the author of the phenomenal #1 New York Times bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie, a novel that explores the unexpected connections of our lives, and the idea that heaven is more than a place; it's an answer.

Eddie is a wounded war veteran, an old man who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his "meaningless" life, and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: "Why was I here?"

This was a great book. Very well written and thought provoking. It shows how people can effect your life and vice versa without you even realizing it.

I read this book shortly after my young cousin was killed and it brought me so much peace. The book proves that you can affect someone's life in a profound way without ever even realizing it. Some of the parts in this book actually gave me chills. It is a book I have read several times since receiving it. I highly recommend it!

I got this book after hearing people talk about it all over the TV. I confess to not being an overly sentimental person, but I was intrigued by the concept. Low and behold I had some misty-eyes on occasion.

Although some points were a bit predictable, I really enjoyed the book. It's a fast read, but also caused me to think about things. I appreciate Eddie's random accident because nobody knows when their time is up. The interaction of characters also resonated because you're reminded that every interaction with people is important - you never know how you influence others. Since reading this book, I have made a conscious effort to be more positive when dealing with others and never to part ways on a sour note.

I recommend this book to anyone, even if they aren't usually prone to sentimental stories.

Such a wonderful journey. I remember reading this and just so intrigued and interested in not only the story, but each person. It's like little books wrapped up in one giant book. I couldn't help but call in love with the story. There's so many smiles and tears that it's had to describe whether it's a happy or sad book. I like to say that it's a great book that will take you on a journey. For people that just like reading good stories with great characters and wonderful imagery, this is it. Mitch Albom always writes great things. I found out that they actually made this into a movie after I read the book and I can't wait to check it out. I wonder how it compares to the book.

From the same author who wrote the bestseller "Tuesdays with Morrie," Mitch Albom hits another home run with his inspirational and uplifting "The Five People You Meet in Heaven." The storyline revolves around a who finds himself in heaven after he dies in a freak accident. He's surrounded by five people, all who made some sort of impression or impact on his life, even though he might not have realized it at the time. Mr. Albom has a way with words and easily and eloquently manages to write about the complex issues of life and death in a very down-to-earth manner. This is a book you won't put down once you start and it's also a book that will transcend the test of time. Highly recommended!

Mitch Albom tells a wonderful story about how all of us our connected and delicately intertwined with each other in life and in death. The story suggests that after death, we go thru a cycle of learning how our lives have touched and changed other lives and indeed our own as well. His tale makes one wonder if our lives our set on a predetermined path that can't be changed by fate. That fate is a well traveled road that we all walk in a line that is patterned just for us, and the people paths that we cross. It is a story that will make you wonder about things that remind you of traces of a dream or even a passing feeling. I think anyone would enjoy this book as it makes one think of things that can only be described as dreamy but relevent to our lives in some way. It would make a great book report on people being connected in some way or form, that we affect other peoples lives as well as their stumbling into ours.

This was a gift from the overflow in my mom's massive personal library. I had just finished Tuesdays with Morrie and liked it, so I thought I'd give The Five People You Meet in Heaven a go.
Overall, the book was very touching, very thought-provoking, and really made me think on a lot of things in my life that I usually did not express gratitude for.
Mitch Albom is a very good writer. While the subject matter of his books is verging a little on the cheesy side, he still gets a valid and thoughful point across to the readers.
With each new book, I understand a little more about appreciating life and it's menialities.

When I read this wonderful book "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" first time, tears rolled down through my cheeks.
I thank Mitch Albom for giving this wonderful literary work which made me to rethink about my life. It is a thought provoking book written in a simple language and I recommend this book for a purposeful reading. After reading this book,I realized the importance of people in my life who are loving me. I think it is better late than never. So at last I am in love with myself as well as those people who love me. The character of Eddie is written beautifully by the author and when he meets his tragic death,I really felt sorry. Like "Tuesdays with Morrie", it is another great work by Mitch Albom on the subject of spiritual living. This book made me to think about purpose of my life and beyond this life.

This book was an amazing read, and I can't state taht enough. It really makes you think about your life and the people around you. After reading this book, I was sure to let everyone I love know that I love them. I found this book at the library, and I still haven't returned it. I've loaned it out to several friends, because I believe everyone needs to have their heart touched by this phenomenal book. I've always been someone who wondered about heaven and what it'd be like, who I'd see there. Just thinking about this book brings tears to my eyes. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good read. It won't only help you better yourself, but it'll open your eyes if you're taking someone around you for granted. After this read, your life will never be the same again.

This is a wonderful book and it really brought tears to my eyes. It made me realize how precious life was – in fact, after reading it I made sure to give everyone I loved a hug.
I think all of us have thought about the afterlife at one time or another, no matter what we may believe in. This book presents the idea that at the moment of our death, we meet five people that has affected our lives (or whose lives we have affected). I love this concept – it makes me feel like our lives aren’t exactly a waste and we all have a reason for being.
Albom is a great writer, no doubt. His stories and plots can be clichéd, though. Halfway through the book, I could already predict what was going to happen next. This, however, didn’t ruin the experience of reading this book for me. Albom uses such wonderful language when describing what’s happening and his words are inspirational. Even though I kind of guessed the ending I still love his inspirational words.

My uncle in the U.S.A. gave me this book last year. I have read it twice and in my opinion this is a great book. It tells you about the lessons of life. The character I liked most is “Eddie”, who lost his life saving a girl. This book is written in direct language which is good to understand quickly. I have referred this book to all my friends to read and understand the meaning of life. And I am also planning to read this book once more. This book changed my thoughts about some people around me. I would like to thanks Mitch Albom for writing this book.

After reading Tuesdays with Morrie, I was excited to see what else Mitch Albom would write. I picked up The Five People You Meet in Heaven from the library, and I was somewhat disappointed with it.

First the positives of the book: the language is direct; the organization of the novel is definitely there; and it does get you to examine how you treat people as you go throughout life and consider how your kindness or rudeness affects others in the long-run.

However, at some points I felt like the organization and trying to get to the point was being TOO pushed by Albom. I wasn't a particularly huge fan of how the main character died in the first place (a unique accident as opposed to one that many people would relate to). I felt like there was a bit of a lack of natural flow. There's an episode of 7th Heaven on the WB that delivers the same point but in a way that is more effective and only takes the time of a 2-part "to be continued" show to tell its point.

I would still recommend it, but not highly. The idea of how even small kindnesses can affect someone is worth musing over, and there's nothing WRONG about the book or unmoving about it. I just don't feel it falls within my 5/5 rating.

This is a well written, thought provoking book. It is a wonderful gift to yourself and for everyone you know who is old enough to read it. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. It will remind you that when we are in an experience the wider significance and possibilities of it often escape us. We rarely see how incidents that seem random to us are actually links in a chain that binds us to others, some of whom we know; some of whom we will never meet but who still deeply affect and are affected by our actions. This book is full of joy and humor. It is easy to and fun to read and packed with profound wisdom. It is a reminder that we are all connected and the ripple that goes out from our ever action touches many people in ways we will never know.

Mitch Albom's book, "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" was left on my bed by my father when I graduated college. "Read this," he told me. A few months later, I finally got to it. And since then, I've read this book probably 10 times.

It is a book about life lessons we all must know. Eddie (our main character) dies trying to save a girl and so we follow his journey to heaven. Each person Eddie meets has a name, but they can be switched out. It's all about the messages. Forgivness, sacrafice, love (and its many forms) and how we touch the lives of others all shine through in this amazing book.

I still wonder who the five people *I* will meet in heaven will be? What lessons do I still need to learn while here on earth? This book opens your mind, it opens your heart - it makes you feel human.

Sometimes Its the Little Things that Make All the Difference

I read the book a few years ago and then recently bought the audio book and listened to it twice. I listened to it once by myself and again with my husband and 90-year-old father. We all enjoyed the way Mitch Albom followed the thread of events from one man's life.

The reader is shown the meaning of what seem to be insignificant events in a life of a common hard workingman. From a common location, a seaside amusement park, a lone character revisits key points in his life that have led him to his destination. He connects the dots of his life from childhood onward to old age, facing some of the difficult consequences of his actions and eventually finding the meaning of life.

This is a great book for discussions. It made us think about our lives and the things that have made all the difference for us. I would highly recommend it in both printed and audio form.

I initially read this book because it was on my summer reading list, and I enjoy Mitch Albom's books. At first I was told that this book is the sequel to Tuesdays with Morrie, but it is not. It is an original novel written by Albom with the subject of death and heaven.
Let me say that I loved this book, it is almost like a mystery and definitely a page turner. Mitch Albom's view of what life after death, is very unique and he transfered his ideas so flawlessly from the creases of him brain to paper. I recommend this novel to everyone who is looking forward to a great story. It has all the characteristics that you would look for in a great book, Great story, great detail, great page-turner, and the best ending ever! The only thing people my find is that the book is a bit short, even though it is complete you'll find yourself wanting more.

Overall, amazing novel, check it out!

I absolutely love this book. After I read it, I recommended it to everybody who would listen. It is amazing how people you never think twice about are impacted by YOUR life and YOUR existence. It helps to make sense out of your own life and your purpose here, as well as gives you a hopeful outcome for what happens after we finish life on earth. I love this book, and highly recommend it to anybody who may be having a hard time letting go of a loved one, or even for somebody who just wants a really good read!
