Shelfari is a Web-based social network that revolves around books. Here, you can share the books that are on your “shelf” in the virtual sense.
This is a really great website. I definitely agree that it's wonderful when a site is created/owned by Amazon, because I always feel safe using Amazon websites. That aside, the organization here is top level, with great interactive design and optimal organization. One of the things I love to use this for, is to show my friends what books I have. They look at the ones I'm done reading, and probably won't pick up again soon, then ask to borrow them! We've got our accounts set as our own personal library.
This is like a wonderful virtual library. Seeing my books on the shelves is something I'm going to join for. I don't have many friends who read in the "real" world, so I'm hoping that here I will find virtual friends to share my passion for reading with. I love that it's by Amazon.
Oh, how I love Shelfari! First off, Shelfari is owned by Amazon, so you know it's a site you can trust. This is a site for book lovers. You can catalog your books and organize them by putting them on virtual shelves, such as "plan to read" and "read". You can mark favorites, which books you physically own, and wish list books (which can be imported from your Amazon wish list. Handy!).
One thing I adore about the site is that the books are actually on display as they would be in a store. They're on virtual wooden shelves (and you can choose the wood, even) with the covers facing out toward you. This makes for a beautiful display, and also makes browsing fun.
There's a very active community with a lot of groups and great people. This site has other book cataloging sites, like Library Thing, beat by a mile.
