Already a classic in the genre, Do What You Are has helped hundreds of thousands of people find truly satisfying work. Do What You Are introduces Personality Type - how you process information, make decisions and interact with the world around you - and shows you which of the 16 types describes you best. It lists dozens of occupations that are popular with people of your type. Then, using workbook exercises and real-life examples to highlight the strengths and pitfalls of each personality type, it shows you step-by-step how to use your unique strengths to customize your job search, ensuring the best results in the shortest period of time. And if you plan to stay in your job, Do What You Are provides savvy advice for getting the most out of your current career. Every other career guide offers generic, one-size-fits-all advice. But because it is based on personality type, Do What You Are helps you determine what you need to be more successful and satisfied.
A couple of years ago I was wrestling with a job that I was deeply unhappy with. I bought a number of career change books, and this was one of them. However, instead of listing through the usual suggestions like "take classes," "ask for a reassignment" or "look for new work," this book asks of you: what kind of a person are you?
Through a detailed personality test, this book asks where you lean in several sections. While at first glance the questions overwhelmed me ("so much work!" I thought), when I gave it a chance on the subway one day, I actually found myself sucked into the test. It's actually very enjoyable to answer the questions they list out, and even more exciting to see what kind of professions best match your personality type and strengths.
As I continue to grow and develop in my career, this is a book I find myself continually coming back to, and one I often recommend to others, as I've never had quite so much fun on a personality test.
