Read by Jack Welch
Jack Welch is a very successful business person and is a very effective leader hence being the former CEO of GE. There were a lot of good ideals presented in this book to help further someone’s skills in management. He expressed that normally candor can be looked at as a harsh or abrasive thing, however if used correctly can help build companies through transparency, team building, and brain storming. In addition, he gives terrific advice on how to draft a mission statement that if followed can transform the future of any business. Although I did like the ideas written in this book, I found it to be a bit of a slow read and lost interest from time to time. However, I am glad I got through it because it has helped my business management and leadership skills immensely.
I bought the audio version of this book so that I could listen to it while I was at work or driving in the car. My CEO had given it as a gift to someone, so while browsing the self improvement section it was ultimately what swayed my decision. At the time I was looking for a book that would help me grow in my career by making me a more effective manager, team mate and employee.
I was fascinated with the leadership principles and sound business advice that Jack gave in this book. It was certainly worth the $30+ dollars that I spent. Most of all, this book helped me to be more candid and ultimately when distributed amongst other senior managers in the company, it helped to promote a more candid atmosphere.
Anyone who is serious about growing into a more effective employee or manager should read this book! It covers everything from the employee review process, mergers and acquisitions to everyday leadership principles.
