Goodreads is a privately run website founded in 2006 by software engineer and entrepreneur Otis Chandler. Before founding Goodreads, Otis was a Software Engineer and Product Manager at Tickle.com. Monster Worldwide, the leading purveyor of online jobs, purchased the company in 2004. Otis graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. Along with a passion for building websites, he’s also a voracious reader.
Is this great or what!?! Here's a place where I can find all the advice and information I need to choose the books I'll be reading! I looked under Sci-fi and found a HUGE selection! I checked under my favorite authors and found books I didn't know about yet. I looked at what other folks found to be good or bad reads and had a laugh or two. Yeah, I'll be back!
At goodreads.com you can list what books you've read, which ones you'd like to read, discuss books with others (who you can add to your friends list if you want to) and even connect with authors. They host book give-a-ways and, of course, book reviews. The only thing I wish was different is that it should be easier to find out if a specific author is a member.
This is a really great website. Not only does it let me organize all my books (I have more than I can count! Well, until goodreads.com counted them for me!) but my friends and I created our own little group. Because you can also view your friends books, we set up our own little swap group. Now when I don't want to read any of the books I currently have, I can check out one of my friends groups and swap them one of my books for theirs! We always return the books of course, but it's a great new way to have new books to read!
This has the coveted distinction of being one of my absolute favorite websites. GoodReads does a lot of things, and it's all about books. First, you can add, rate, and review all the books you've read. And you can put them on different virtual shelves. It's that feature that finally helped me organize my books and remember where they all were.
There are sections where you can not only mark what you're reading right now, but can mark the exact page you're on and make any notes on it. I tend to want to take notes, and since I don't want to mark up the book, this has become a great feature for me. I also love the groups. There are different groups for everything imaginable, from genres you like to where you live.
This site has made it easy for me to keep track of what I want to read, simply by putting a book on my "to read" shelf. Now I don't have to go digging through all my books to figure out what's next.
