Five Good Minutes: 100 Morning Practices To Help You Stay Calm & Focused All Day Long by Jeffrey Brantley

What difference can five minutes make in the crazy, nonstop course of a sixteen-hour day? For people feeling overwhelmed with responsibility, bored with the same tired routine, or frustrated about how to create meaning in their lives, a little time well spent can lead to extraordinary changes. This book shows readers how to dramatically improve their lives in just a few moments each day. The concept is powerfully simple: Readers take the time each morning to be fully present, to set a clear intention for themselves, and to really engage in any of 100 fun and easy-to-follow practices. Soon they will discover that amazing things can happen in just five minutes.

The book provides guided imagery, relaxation, mindfulness, and meditation practices-fun activities that relieve stress and create meaning and purpose in the reader's day. These practices help readers feel good, get motivated, and become inspired to change their lives for the better. Over time, these activities become guideposts readers will return to throughout the day, providing energy and inspiration when they need them most. In other words, the time readers of this book take for themselves in the morning might just be the five good minutes that change their lives.

This book was the first of the 3 books in the Five Good Minutes series that I read. Like most people, I am not a morning person either. And it was a real struggle for me to get up and spend five minutes battling concentration and sleep. For the first week, I was literally killing myself, because, I wasn't exactly concentrating, nor was I sleeping. But the second week, it got better, and the third week, I got up without even an alarm clock. Those 5 minutes were already a part of my daily life, and I didn't realise how much energised I felt after every session. But obviously meditaion isn't somthing you can master in a day or two. It took me sometime, and the wait was totally worth it. Actually, this book drove me to buy the other two books in the series, because I thought, that if someone who was never a morning person could have so much fun in the morning, how much fun could meditaion be for the rest of the day?

I am not a morning person! At ALL! I really struggle with this. So being a fan of the other two books, Evenings and Work, I knew I had to give this a try. I started with 1 on the first morning (fyi, wake up 10 minutes early to take part in this book's advice) and then for the next 99 days I did just one each morning. At the end of that run I got kind of depressed I was out of ideas but I just started back on #1. By doing that, and redoing that over and over, I've been able to really LOVE waking up excited about the new way I can refresh my mind to go into work and really preform to the best of my ability instead of dread waking up to a lot of problems. Great read, even if you are a morning person....I'm jealous of you!

I have read this whole series of books and each one is wonderful. I especially love this one, because getting up in the mornings and being positive is very difficult for me. I suffer from depression and anxiety/panic disorder, so sometimes doing anything at all is a chore. This book is broken down into four distinct sections, each one dealing with a different aspect of starting your day and being real with yourself to help yourself deal with the every day stresses and triggers you will encounter. There are 100 total mini-meditations as I like to call them, and each one is for a specific issue like learning to say no or how to laugh off something that is bothering you. Not all 100 are going to fit every person's needs, but I guarantee that most of them will speak to you at some point during your morning routine. I would recommend this book to anyone who is open to meditation and is not afraid to get real. I know it has really helped me to literally get myself out of bed some mornings. I keep the book beside my bed for just such instances. I can just grab it, be inspired, and then start my day.
