Five Minutes to a Happier, More Productive Workday
Is your workday filled with chaos, stress and, at times, and inability to focus? Do you have mountains of projects ahead of you but no motivation to tackle them? In less time than you would spend on a coffee break, you can fill your workday with calm, balance, and serenity. This collection of mindfulness practices, the third in the breakaway Five Good Minutes(tm) series, can help you transform your workday from tired and uninspired to engaged and productive in just a few good minutes.
Whether sitting at your desk or ducking into the supply closet, you can include these stress-relieving and centering activities into even the busiest schedule. These practices can help you deal with difficult coworkers, tyrannical bosses, impossible deadlines, and more. Your five good minutes each day will reward you with increased productivity, reduced workplace conflict, and a sense of serenity that will start to spread to the rest of your life.
Being a huge fan of the other two books, it was obvious that I got this one too. I wasn't surprised at how much this book helped me, considering that by this time, I knew it would, like the other two books did. A work place is like Jurrasic Park. Only the fittest can survive and there are always bigger animals hunting for us, or smaller animals ratting out on us. And among all this confusion, it really is hard to concentrate on your work. So, everytime I feel like I'm going to blow my fuse, I take this book out of my desk drawer, pick an activity, and do it silently in my cabin. Works like a spell everytime. I'm a much better colleague and my temper's under check, and I enjoy work more than I ever did! This book is definitely recommended for people who are extremely tensed at work, rushing to meet deadlines, and always on the go. It'll slow your mind down, helping it to work faster.
I am guilty of taking 55 minutes, even 5 hours at work to slack off...and the opposite is true, I've worked 22 hour days, so I know what it means to over and under work. This book helps you kind of put all that into order. It is a little corny in some spots but what is perfection anyway? There are 100 little things you can do to produce calmness and stress relievers that help you get through the day. I really like the 5 minute nap! It requires a special exotic ball, and what you do is lay on a couch and you hold the ball in your face-up hands. As your body fully relaxes, the ball falls from your hand waking you up, and that was your five minutes! (It works with a tennis ball). Good read, excellent for office party gifts!
I got this book as a gift from a co-worker who knew that I liked this series of books and had read the other three and recommended them to her to read. I did not know this one was available and was thrilled to get it, as work is my #1 stress maker and cause of most of my anxiety/panic issues. This book has 100 mini-meditations in it that help you to deal with the stresses of work and thus help you to do better at your job and with all aspects of working. Not all 100 meditations are going to help you, as they did not me, because they are not all related to what you personally feel or deal with. However, the meditations cover all the bases and you will definitely find many that will help you and suit your needs/issues. Once again the book is divided into four sections with very distinct meditations in each. My personal favorites and ones that have helped me the most are the one that deals with playing the "what if" game, dealing with co-worker anger, dealing with on the job change, and staying calm in stressful situations. I keep this book in my desk drawer and can not tell you how many breaks and lunches have been spent reading it and going through the meditations. A must have for any desk in my opinion.
